All the different screen display adjustments are found starting on page 10 in the manual. If the manual is not readily available, here is a free link: Viking Huskylock 936 User Manual Sewing Advisor Display Function
The screen contrast is not adjustable on the Husqvarna 936 serger.

The age of the serger is not what is relevent. How much was it used is the relevant question. Call HV customer service and give them the SN and they can tell you when it was made.

I believe you just remove the thread from the threads you are not
using.

Rethread. If still not working the loopers are out of adjustment. You might want to take it to an authorized husqvarna viking dealer for service.
