Why wont my governor pull in when my Honda ex1000 is under load?

Generator is running good but when I put it under load load meaning my big polishing buffer it does not pull in the governor and run the buffer but if I manually pull the governor in it works fine any suggestions Ken

Could be the governor arm has slipped on the governor shaft and needs reset. But first drain all the fuel and carburetor fuel bowl, and replace with fresh fuel.

There are plenty of internet how to videos on setting the govenor of Honda small engines.

You may have a faulty actuator that governs it for you need to check if coil of actuator is excited with power when you draw current

While attending college I worked at a tool rental center and learned a great deal about matching generators to customer requirements and troubleshooting customer owned units. There are simple tests that you can perform, however, first some info on what to expect from a generator. Most generators are overrated and under powered. You should only expect to get about 60 - 75% of rating. Example, a commercial honda 5000w generator has an 11hp motor that can only produce about 9.5 hp at 3600 rpm. If a customer needed 5000w of power, we would rent them an 8000w generator because as the generator is loaded to max the voltage will drop. You generator will probably only provide steady voltage ex. 115v at 60 cycles to about 3500w then voltage will begin to drop. New generators have automatic voltage regulator that varies the power to the armature increasing/decreasing the power of the magnet. These voltage regulators suffer a high failure rate and are expensive. If your generator is not giving you 3500 watt at 115v 60 cycles your engine may have a few problems and your power generator end may need tweaking. (I would not expect to achieve 5500w at 115v with briggs 10hp) .
The governor is about 2 inches in diameter and turns off the cam gear inside the engine. It is flyball type with two or three small arms that react to rpm. The faster the engine turns, more force is applied to the governor arm to reduce engine speed. Easy to test, with engine running use finger pressure against the arm to increase speed and you should feel a greater resistance as the engine speed increases. Another simple test, remove air filter to expose butterfly inside the carb. Move the governor arm and check that the butterfly opens fully. If it does not open fully linkage and governor is not set correctly. Next, start engine and load generator up to max and check that butterfly opens to full as the load increases. When the butterfly opens all the way under load the engine is at max. Add up the wattage of all the tools/appliances you used to load the engine to get an idea of max load . Lets assume that the shop adjusted the governor properly, if the governor was not working the engine would over rev. and damage would occur. As you were told the governor spring controls speed and can be adjusted somewhat by bending tab or adjustment screw. But a review of your generator manual or that series of briggs engine will show that there are several governor springs available and different placement holes on the governor arm to attach the spring that will change the power curve. Pulling on the spring can only do so much, however changing the spring to different gauge /turns/material or differnet location on the governor arm will cause the engine to perform differently. These springs are sold thru briggs dealers by part number for your engine. This would be considered tweaking to get a different power curve.
Now for the generator. Some generators have a capacitor incorporated in the windings. This capacitor must measure within 95% of rating. Remove from circuit for testing. Finally look very carefully at the commutator rings for any evidence of brush bounce. If the brushes do not perfectly seat you will lose power. If your generator is brushless you can only hope that the diodes are within spec. because it is too difficult to test them. They also must be removed to test. Finally if your generator has an automatic voltage regulator the only test would be to replace with a known good part. At the rental center we stocked spare parts so that we could quickly find fault. There is soo much to learn and the life too short. I hope this helps good luck, please email your questions.

I'd say your battery in the generator is going bad or bad. They are very small and do not hold a charge for very long. The noise you heard was probably the starter shaft hitting the flywheel cogs. I doubt any harm was done as long as you did not repeatedly try to start it with the key. Why Honda put a battery in these is because they are intended for use in a campground setting, where they would be used on a daily basis and the battery would constantly charged. Whereas people like us buy them for emergencies only, they sit for long periods, and the battery goes flat, and the fuel clogs the carb and we get the surging issue. That's my 2 cents. When I brought mine home new, I Sta-bil'd the heck out of the gasoline, this past winter, on start-up, the unit surges. Of course the battery was flat.

Flight systems can test the onan circuit boards. google them they will come up. First class operation my board was was checked out and back to me in about a week, They also sell new boards and deduct the 20 dollar bench fee if yours is bad and you buy a replacement from them.

Hello. I'm sure that you've checked your air filter, so check the pinhole vent on the fuel filler cap. Next time it dies, immediately crack the cap and listen for the sucking sound of air rushing into the tank. If you hear this, clean the cap!

7 hp brigs engine on my generator runs two fast producing 127 volts. how do I slow it down?


Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. Since you did not mention the make or model number of your generator I will respond in generic terms. If your generator is at 127 volts with NO load it is adjust at the very top end of the manufacturers limits. There is a 10% tolerance so 120 VAC + 12 is 127 VAC. Under an electrical load above 500 watts the generator should drop the output voltage slightly so your generator would still be within factory limits. Personally on any generator as a repair person; I set the output voltage at 126 VAC no load so that when the user puts the generator to work the output voltage is good. If your generator is running at 127 VAC under load then you can adjust the governor screw on the governor plate CCW about 1/2 turn to drop the voltage. Without a generator model number or engine number I can not tell you exactly where the governor plate is on your engine / generator. The screw will have a lock nut that you must loosen 1/4 turn then turn the adjustment screw CCW to drop the voltage. Just make sure to re-tighten the lock nut when the adjustments are complete. Mind you by decreasing the output voltage you also drop the output freqency at the same time you decrease the output voltage. It is better to have 125 -127 VAC under a no load condition as the more electrical load you add the more voltage drop you will notice. It is best to adjust the generator to 122.5 -123 VAC under a medium load. (50% of output capacity) A bread toaster is 1400 - 1600 watts and is a good load for a 3000 watt generator. Also a good hand held hair dryer will use around 1600 watts. If you use this type of load and the voltage output is 122.5 to 123 VAC I would not adjust anything. I have been working on generators since 1970 so this is nothing new for me. I hope that you understand everything I posted. Got a honda 5hp 4 stroke engine on a generator wont run with air filter on runs perfect without can you help


Check to make sure the filter isn't plugged. If it is good, look below the filter and see if it touches or interferes with the governor spring or the governor rod on the carbueratior linkage. Thos are anout the only situations where an air filter would keep an engiine from running. Marvin.

My 3500 wont idle up when somethings plugged in


It will only idle up under a load if you apply a load and nothing happens the governor, governor shaft, spring, or linkage is at fault. Check to make sure all these are connected and working freely and not binding. This applies to all small gasoline generators.

Ginne stalls under load


Likely that your governor has creeped out of tolerance. Very common with Emerald line of generators. Try to borrow, if not already have one, a multimeter that is able to read frequency and voltage. At no load, frequency should be 62 or 63 hertz. At full load, frequency is going to be around 57-58 hertz. Voltage at no load should be 127 or so, full load should drop down to around 115 give or take. Adjust governor for faster engine operation for low voltage / frequency, slow down for too fast frequency or high voltage (though that is likely not the case here).

Problem with Emeralds is that the governor spring rubs on bracket, and also has a tendency to stretch. If this is the case, adjusting governor will be near impossible between full and no load.
