How to get a WD My Book 4TB with a brand new harddisk drive working again?

I mean, how to reach a factory reset state. I don't have the original drive anymore and I only get I/O errors when I try to initialize it with Windows Disk Management. There is no defect but some kind of protection etc.

SOURCE: installing new HDD & another DVD drive

Problem with HDD is power usage 320gig uses to much, WD 160 is best though just a bit small which may cause issue if you fill it up. WD200gig OK but at threshold of what power supply can handle. Disk needs to be filled with original disk image to get firmware and custom file system. Smallest I've got image down to is 11gig

SOURCE: Dell Dimension 2400 - Adding second HD

I presume that the hard drives are ATA drives, and if the WD and Maxtor are installed on the same IDE cable then the boot drive, the WD HD needs to have the jumper set to Master or Master with Slave drive, and the Maxtor needs the jumper set to Slave drive.
If the computer on boot up doesn't recognise the boot drive the move the jumper to the CSL setting.

If the Maxtor is on the second IDE cable it does not matter if the jumper to either Master or Slave provided you do not have anything else connected to this cable. If you have a CD or DVD connected to the second IDE cable as well as the Maxtor HD then you need to check the devices on this cable (ie. the jumpers) are not set the same on both devices.

On boot up go into the BIOS and check that the master and slave devices are set to Auto (detect).

You should after booting up now see both hard drives and any CD/DVD.
The data on the Maxtor drive would include your original Windows and programs and data, you would need to remove these redundant files and programs to recover disk space.

If you can see on boot up all the hard drives and CD/DVD (as master and slave drives) but if you do not see the Maxtor drive from My Computer, then you need to delete the partition on the Maxtor drive, create a new partition, and format the drive, in this case you will not recover any of your original data.
To do this, you need to go to the Control Panel, Then Administrative Tools, then Computer Management then Disk Management. Right Click on Disk 1 (it should show a 80 Gb hard drive), delete the partition, then it would show this as an unallocated drive.
Right Click on this drive again and create a primary partition, follow the instructions and format the drive in NTFS file format.

LaCie 2big Triple - I replaced one drive, but capacity is wrong

Most likely the problem you are encountering is due to the RAID mode the device is set in. Most RAID arrays utilize multiple drives of the same size, or with drives of differing size, they just use a portion of the largest that matches the smallest drive. When the device rebuilt the array it partitioned off a portion of the 4tb drive of the same size as the existing 500gb drive. If you want to use full capacity of both drives you would need to use JBOD mode, which just strings the disks together into a storage pool using all available space. This won't offer the data redundancy of RAID1 or speed boost of RAID0, but should allow using full space.

Backup any vital data before doing anything, then look for a switch on the back. Rather than RAID0 or 1 the options may be labelled Safe or Fast, but JBOD is usually still labelled JBOD, or sometimes Big. You can try just flipping the switch to JBOD and seeing if it rebuilds to use all space. If that doesn't work you may need to remove the 4tb drive, connect it to a different system and erase it to get rid of the 500gb partition, then with the Lacie set to JBOD reinstall the 4tb drive so it will add its full size to the array.

The safest option though would be to buy another 4tb drive, backup all data and install both 4tb drives with the device set to RAID1/Safe. You would only get 4tb of total storage, but it would mirror the data on both drives so if one fails the other will still have your data. With JBOD you won't have any auto-backup. If a drive fails the data on it will be lost.

Reset wd my passport

If this is western digital world edition

Download the computer software for your Western Digital My Book World Edition if you don't have it installed on your computer.

The software can be downloaded on the Western Digital website.

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=118&lang=en

Install the software to your computer.

Go to the "Start" menu.

Click "All Programs," the "Western Digital" folder and then "My Book World Edition Software" to launch the software.

Switch to the "System" tab. Click either the "Restore Configuration" or "Full Restore" button on the tab, depending on your My Book World Edition drive.

Click the "Browse" button, select the factory settings default restoration point, and then "General Restore" to return the unit to factory settings, or click "Full Restore" and then "Restore Factory Default," again depending on your specific My Book World Edition device.

The unit powers off, all data is erased from the hard drive and the My Book is returned to factory settings.

Hope this helps

My WD External hard drive is no longer recognized by my Mac. It was fine when I went to bed. Showed no warning symptoms that I am aware of.

Hi,

I would like to know the way the Drive is connected to MAC.
Have you connected it using USB or Firewire ?
If you have connected it using Firewire, Try connecting it using USB 2.0 Cable.

Let me know.

My Western Digital 500GB EDD has been making Clicking noise

Here are some options to try: - Purchase an alternate enclosure for your hard disk enclosure in case the circuit board in the WD case has gone bad. - Try accessing the drive via MS DOS window and use CHKDSK command to repair the drive (if you can get it to be recognized). - Try connecting the drive to an alternate PC or even a Mac to see if the drive can be recognized (perform disk repair if recognized).

My computer doesn't recognize the WD book

Hello,

Several things can be done. You can try DIY software, assuming you have enough free space on your computer and it's a minor failure this may work.

Second, the enclosure itself may be failing, you can try moving the drive into a new enclosure, to do this take the drive to a PC shop and ask the technicians to test the hard drive in a new enclosure. If the drive works in the new enclosure you're set, if not move on to the next step.

Finally if you don't want the risks of the DIY method and the new enclosure fails, reply back with your location(Country, State and City) and I will be happy to refer you to a pro near you who can assist you with the process of recovering your files.

Hope this helps FixYa,

No drivers found

Hi,

If the lights are lit and you can hear the drive spin up power is likely fine, you state you tested the USB cable so we'll assume that's fine. This leaves two large possibilities left, first the drive circuitry may have failed. If this is the case you should still see the USB Mass Storage Controller in your Device Manager. This will mean you need professonial assistance recovering you files.

If the USB Mass Storage doesn't show up in device manager you may be in luck and it may be the USB circuitry that has failed. If this is the case, pop into any reputable PC shop and have the techs move the harddrive into a new enclosure to test it. If it works there, buy the new enclosure and you're on your way. If it doesn't again you will likely need a recovery pro.

If you need a recovery pro, reply back here by adding a comment including your Country, State and City and I will refer a nearby Pro who can assist you further.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris
