The most common reason for this is that the needle has been inserted backwards, always have the flat side of the needle inserted facing away from you and the rounded side of the needle facing you. If this is not the reason please comment with the make and model of your machine.

Bobbin thread keeps getting knotted on the back. Tension eleven

If the thread "mess" is on the bottom of the fabric, it is most often an upper thread issue. I suspect it is either misthreaded or not completely seated.

Remove the top thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Verify the thread path is correct.
Set the upper tension to the midway point and then tweak it so the top and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

The tension on my machine is off.I don't know which thread to adjust.bobbin or top thread. on fabric top stitch seems ok,bottom stitch bunches up and is loose. How do I readjust the tensions?

If the thread problem appears under the fabric, it is a top thread issue.

If the thread problem appears on the top of the fabric, the bobbin thread is the issue.

Perhaps the upper thread is not seated completely in the tension disk. Remove the upper thread from the machine, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot, then rethread from the beginning. Make sure the thread path is correct. Test your stitch.

If the thread is still looping under the fabric, the upper tension is too loose. Set the upper tension to the midway point. Test and adjust the tension until it is where you want it. Preferred tension is when both threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

Top thread showing on bottom using pe500

First, remove the upper thread. RAISE the presser foot and rethread the upper thread making sure the path is correct.

Retest the stitch. The tension is correct, both threads should meet in the middle of the fabric. If the upper thread is still showing under the fabric, slightly tighten the upper tension. Keep adjusting until the threads are where you'd like them.

Top thread covers bobbin thread makes. Stitches very thick

Remove all the thread from the machine.

Install a brand new needle.

ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot during the threading process and rethread the machine from the beginning. (Check that the upper and bobbin threads are threaded correctly in your machine.)

Set the tension dial to the midway point. This is a factory standard setting but each machine may vary.

Test your machine. The ideal tension is when the upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric. If the upper thread is showing on the bobbin side of the fabric, the upper tension is too loose. However, if the bobbin thread is showing on the top of the fabric, the upper tension is too tight.

Tension is not static--whenever you change projects, ie fabric, thread, needle, you may need to test the tension on some scrap project fabric first. Get the tension adjusted before stitching the project.

Make sure you clean and lubricate your machine regularly to keep it operating--consult your owner's manual and use only good quality sewing machine oil (NO 3-in-1, cooking oil, WD-40, or old brown stinky sewing machine oil).

If you are still having issues, take it for service.

Why does it knot up underneath?

If your machine is creating a mess of thread under the fabric, the upper thread tension is too loose and is causing what is called "thread nesting" or "bird nesting." Tighten the upper thread tension (righty-tighty) and test. Keep adjusting until the upper thread and bobbin thread meets in the middle of the fabric.

You might also try this method as some machines will create thread nests when the first stitches are made:

Upper tension is to tight on the izek singer machine we have. Also on the bottom of the fabric the thread is looping up and tangeling.

Loops on the bottom mean the upper tension isn't tight enough. First make sure you thread the upper thread with the presser foot UP. Then do a test seam on the same type of fabric. If you still have problems. Tighten the upper tension a little then test seam again. Keep doing this until your problem is resolved.
