Power-on assword I have an Acer Aspire 3000 laptop that hasn't been used in a while and I cannot remember the power-on password.There is nothing that needs to be kept on the laptop so it does not matter if all programmes are wiped as they can be re-installed.Can you offer any assistance on overriding the power-on password, or re-setting it?JW

I would suggest accessing your account and then changing the password.

There is a hidden Administrator account that is created when your operating system is installed. Access that account and then reset your password.

1. Boot your computer and press F8 repeatedly
2. Access Safe Mode
3. Key in "Administrator" in Username, with no password.
4. Go to Control Panel, then User Accounts
5. Select the account you want to reset the password
6. Change the password

Could be a bad memory chip or a hard drive crash. Can you hear the hard drive engage? If so, is there any clicking or dull thunking sounds? Both of these are indicators of a hard drive failure.

In this case myself assume that your acer do a problem in the memory, try remove and clean the memory.

1. boot your acer without the memory. hear beep? if yes,
Only memory has a problem, if no, then;

examine the mainboard of your acer.

If you can hear a beep then fix back the memory and start the system.

if this not solve the problem, replace the memory.

In case that it hard for you to open the laptop let the repairman do it for you so that all your problem will be examine.

you should be able to press F8 on start up, so as you are able to start in safe mode, the option will come up and highlight the line 'Start windows in safe mode' and press enter. When windows starts the icons will be larger than normal, so don't worry, but their will show your own account and an administrartor account, click on the administrator account and go to accounts and select the account that is passworded. You should then either be able to delete the password, change, or delete the account, when done, restart pc and it should be ok and back to normal
