Question about Compaq Presario M2000 Notebook

Power light comes on will not boot up.

Please would you help me. My friend has a compaq presario M2000 PC notebook which is 2 years old. It has not had much use and never been misused. It was on a table working successfully. Switched off. Switched on again some time later. The power button illuminated the caps and number lock lights flashed on as usual and the fan switched on momentarily and then went off. No noises were made. The screen remained black. This fault is repeated at every attempt to boot up. Nothing is plugged into the computer. The fault occurs whether the battery is used or removed and the power pack is used. Removing and reinserting the RAM has made no difference. We have downloaded the service manual from HP and have completely exposed the mother board so feel ready to fix the problem if we only knew what it was. Could any one help us please Many thanks Juliet.

Thank you Tom! We have tested the power pack with the volt meter. The output stated on the pack is 18.5V. The meter reads 18.74 V. We are assuming that the battery charges because the charging light comes on when the Ac adapter is plugged in and is extinguished after the usual time taken for it to charge. We are really grateful for your advice. If you have any other suggestions we remain undeterred and keen to try them.

Hi Tom.Thanks for your help. I would have to buy a battery connector board so I wanted to check with you first. We have tried with no battery in at all and there is exactly the same fault. Does this shed any more light?

  • undeterable Nov 29, 2007

Yes Tom, I definitely will. I am awaiting text from parts supplier re the availability of the battery connector board. May I just check with you that the notebook would behave the same even if the battery and AV adapter are not plugged in? Thanks for all your help so far. I am away for 5 days will contact you as soon as I have installed the board.

Hi Tom. I think that I must have mislead you with my description. I forgot to mention that the power button stays illuminated after the fan and caps and number lights have gone off. The power button stays on until it is held down for 5 seconds at which point it goes off. We have tested the battery connector board with a circuit tester and it is working fine. Sorry about the confusion. Do you have any further suggestions we could try?

Thanks Tom, We will put computer back together this WE. Am slightly concerned as the display is black ie completely and utterly unilluminated, not just dim. Will get back to you when we have checked your proposition. Please don't give up on us.

Tom may I just say that I don't think it is a screen problem because we did try the first half of the procedure you suggested before we asked your advice and it did not help. Also we think that the fan would continue to run if it were a screen malfunction. Please remember that the fan only comes on for a few seconds then goes off leaving the power button illuminated +/- the charging button on the front depending on whether the AC adapter is charging the battery or not. Thanks for your advice.

Thanks Tom. I am unclear what you mean by a power issue. The power button which remains illuminated till it is switched off, is connected to the motherboard by a ribbon which is situated beyond the battery connector board and the external DC input. Does this make it any clearer? Thanks for your advice.

Check the power pack tip for voltage (19v).
Power pack could of gone and battery drained.

The first thing to change out would be the battery connector board.

Sounds the same to me. The board switches between the battery and outside power.

If this doesnt work I would be really suprised.

you are right in thinking that the fan would continue to run if it were a screen malfunction.

It seems that a power issue is the reason for your laptop trouble.

underable,By power issue I mean that the battery or AC power is not reaching the board, probably meaning that the battery board is bad. Did you change it out yet?

I have a compaq Presario cq40-215wm wil not boot screen stays black. light by caps lock and num lock blink 1 time over and over. Got the same result with a hard boot

Have you tried removing the battery, and disconnecting the power adapter. If you have not tried that please try that.
1. Once you have removed both. 2. Power up computer with just power adapter connected and no battery. 3. If the computer powers up shut computer back down 4. Put battery back in and leave power connected
If that does not fix the issue. The back light has possibly gone out on the computer. Depending on how old the computer is. 1. Either contact the manufacturer of the computer 2. Take computer to a repair shop 3. Consider purchasing a new computer

Update bios on compaq presario m2000?

There are usually two ways with Compaq's

One is with a DOS boot floppy

The other is via a windows utility

both are usually available from the support section on the Compaq website.

Heads up only do this on mains power not battery !
DON'T stop it or switch off for ANY reason

If you knew how many crashed bios questions come through Fixya.

Check the text file or only as to what problems that bios fixes and if they don't apply to you then don't do it.

Most bios updates fix very minor issues nowadays

Compaq M2000 boot

check your memory card(s) you may have a bad on or two, and if that doesn't work then sounds like the mother board has become defective and needs replacing, but the ram Memory would be the cheeper fix first.

Compaq presario m2000 imediately shuts down after

Check for blocked air passages - vacuum out the fan ports. (Don't use canned air - you'll just blow the dust inside, where it will act as an insulator and help things overheat.) Make sure the fans are actually turning. If there's any mold growing inside, that could cause the problem too.And for more contact
