Power drops on galaxy dx 959 when switched from ssb to am and back

if you mean that the power drops from ssb to am then when you change it back what you should do is check to see what power you have to begin with.you may have to go inside the radio to adjust the power. there is hi power and Low power so watch yourself.

Power meter on my dx-979 barely moves off of 0 when transmitting the swr meter also hovers around 1.0 no matter what channel...not used to seeing such low swr readings and almost nothing on the power...

I would check the radio with an external meter to see if it is the transmitter or the Meter in the radio. If it is the meter in the radio it could have a bad detection Diode or just oout of adjustment or even a bad calibration pot. other wise start looking to fix your transmitter like finals or other similar problem.

Well, some meters are set different than others,to see what is going on,you need a good WATT-SWR meter, but that is not a bad reading of SWR, you can get one at Radio Shack. You can not go by the meter that is on the radio,it,s probably not set right. hope this helps..
