How to repair cord winder on a shop vac compact 1300

Take it to your local vac shop for repair. Switches are not that expensive.

From what I have heard, the switch on these units can sometimes be defective. Also, looking closely at the the AC cord may help determine if there is damage to it that should be repaired.

this can be tricky and dangerous if you are not familiar.The cord winder had a metal coil system that spins very fast.Sometime people pull the cord too far out causing the coil to seize.To get to the winder slide off the "Electrolux" slide off[located on the sides of the vacuum] Your best bet is to take it to a vacuum repair shop.Before trying anything take a flat screw driver and puch it in the hole where the cord comes out and push it in,sometimes this fixes the problem sorry I cant tell you more as it is hard to explain the procedure....Please be careful.

These type of cord retractors have a set of contacts which sometimes get corroded or bent. Or maybe the reel has become wobbly.
As the cord reel moves, these contacts should have enough pressure stay in contact with the tracks on the reel at all times.

You sound like a handy person, so you would have to take the assembly right out of the machine and perhaps be able to correct the situation.
Some of these contacts are easily accessible, and others not so easily.

While you have the old assembly out anyway, you also might be able to buy a new one to replace it.

Without a close look it's hard to guess what to advise you.

Maybe a vac repair shop could throw in an tune up as well?
Check the motor brushes and so on?

These get stuck all the time...I own 2 of these , and I have done this many times...Get a can of WD40 or some type of spray lubricant with the little straw in the nozzle. Try pulling and pushing the cord back inside(don't pull it too hard) while you are spraying the lubricant directly inside where the cord comes out. push the cord back in as if you were going to force all of it back inside the cord winder. You may even have to bump the back of the machine where the cord winder is located. But it will wind back up.If you are worried about getting the lubricant on something that it doesn't need to be on , then take the Vac apart and spray it directly on the the coils of the cord winder..A lot of times, that's all they do in the repair shop when they tell you they replaced the cord winder....

If you vacuum wont turn on it is most likely the cord winder. This is a pretty big repair, you wouldn't want to attempt it yourself. Most shops should be able to repair the cord winder for about $50-75. If you need a new cord winder expect to pay about $150.

There are two keys holding the body together, underneath the bumpers on the side of the vac. With the bag door open these keys when gripped with pliers will slide forward to release the body panels.

Before opening the vac, gently push the cord back inside the housing.
2 possibilities:
If the spool rotates and allows the cord to push in , the body must be disassembled, and the cord winder removed and the spring reloaded. This is tricky work. you will need to wind the entire cord onto the spool, then load 3.5 rotations onto the coil spring for tensioning, then reassemble. It's a bit like working on a land mine of you're new at it. Wear safety glasses.

BUT if the spool is locked from the outside and the cord wont push in or pull out, a fine , long blade screwdriver can be inserted diagonal to the body through the cord slot and with luck you can lift a cog of the spool releasing tension and the rewind will work. try that first , but be gentle . You must release the cord spool allowing a a dog ear catch cog to release inside by gently lifting upwards.

It is most likely your cord winder. They are a little tricky to fix yourself. A repair shop will probably charge about $50. To fix it. The contacts where the cord winder plugs into the motor need to be cleaned and adjusted. Just don't let your repairman tell you that you need a new cord winder.
