It is customary to separate different parts of a phone number with a space but that is for human recognition only. Some phonebooks allow a space so it looks right to us even though it serves no purpose when dialling the number. A lot of phonebooks do not allow a space and force people to type the number as it will be seen by the phone software.
The space when typing names and the delete key vary between the make and type of phone. My phone uses the zero (0) key as a space bar. If a zero is required the key is kept depressed for a second longer. My phone has a dedicated "clear" key but lots of phones use the "back" key for delete.
My advice is to keep playing around and reach for the instruction manual if all else fails.
