My playstation 3 shut down and won't turn back on for more than a few seconds. I'm getting a flashing red light.

hi, the flashing red light is telling you that the ps3 has over heated and has shut down, here is a list of things you should do to try and solve your problem.

1. switch it off at the plug and remove all wires and leave it off till you have done the following.
2. have a good look at the air vents on the console and check they are free from dust or fluff, you can use a vac to vac out all the air vents to ensure no dust or fluff is stopping the air circulating around your ps3.
3. make sure your ps3 is on a flat surface and not being used whilst its on carpet.
4. never put your ps3 on top of anything like dvd player or sky/cable box, your ps3 needs to bo on its own with nothing near it that gives off any heat if its on a shelf this shelf needs to be open so air can circulate around the whole of the ps3.
5 plug back in all the wires make sure you ps3 has been off for at least 30 min and unplugged from the mains for this time, plug it all back in and then make sure your ps3 is on flat even surface then switch it on and see if it will come back on, if it does then make sure your ps3 is cleaned regular and all the vents are free from fluff or dust.

If it dont work then switch it off and unplug for 30min then stand the ps3 on its side and then try switching it back on.

if it still dont work then this is a clear sign damage has been caused due to over heating, now when you switch it on check if you can hear the fan coming on if you cant then this means the fan has over heated due to dust build up and this has then caused damage to the processor.
if you hear the fan come on but your ps3 still dont come on then this points towards the processor being damaged due to over heating and this will then need replacing.

if this is the case then you need to check if you have any warranty left on your ps3 and if you do take it back to where you bought it from and tell them whats happening and they will then exchange it for a new one.

if your warranty has ran out then the chances are the fan in your ps3 is the old type and its not up to the job of keeping the ps3 cool enough to stop it over heating, the problem with the old type of fan is that if dust builds up it will cause the fan to stop cooling and this then causes the processor to over heat, so what your going to need to do now is get your ps3's circuit board tested to find out the exact fault and to also see if their are any more faults as the cost of repair can be quite high.

if their are a couple of things wrong with it then the cost of repair would be more than the price of a new ps3 so you will need to get a quote on the best price and then decide what you need to do.

hopefully after giving the ps3 a good clean and let it cool down it should be working but if the damage has all ready been done then this is going to need new parts.

Sony ps3 3 yrs old, wont read game discs but does read blue ray & regular dvd movies

It rarely actually helps to clean the laser for the PS3. It needs a new laser because the old one is "burnt out". It's a really common problem with them.

I buy mine at http://parts.consolerepairguy.com they run about $75 each.

I run a repair business and that place has best prices aside from Hong Kong which I don't trust.

HDD

Hi, how old is your ps3? if its less than a few years I would think about getting on the PS3 website http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/
with your model/serial number if its still under warranty you should get a replacement.
If its old and not under warranty it isn't that hard to replace a ps3 HD
It even tells yuo how to do it in your PS3 manual
Any 2.5" internal sata drive should do, and they are not that expensive
If you have lost your ps3 manual here is another guide on changing hard drive http://vgstrategies.about.com/od/ps3cheatsandcodes/ss/PS3HDDUpgrade.htm
good luck

It heats upan i kant play more than 30 mins an wen it heats up its like realy hot idk wats wrong wit it its stop playing da game

Somthing is wrong with you air unit in your system and the reason it is shutting off is because a heating sensor is telling it too.....you gotta fix you air unit or keep a fan on the system while playing it......do not try to disable the heating sensor because the motherboard will blow up

Ps3 turns off

the answer is no they will not honor the warranty unless they do the work but your problem may be more simple than you think and cost no more than a can of pressurized air $2.00-$5.00 at any walmart. this is so cheap it cant hurt to give it a try. it has worked for me about 75% of the time. take a can of pressurized air with a tube nozzle open the DVD tray on your unit and spray a small amount in... just enough to blow dust out two or three small shots place an old cd in to cover the laser and shut it off. unplug it wait a few minutes and start by spraying air into the vents always use small pulses you should see dirt and other contaminants start to blow out continue until it clears up.

Do this to the processor heat sink this will blow off any dirt dust hair or other contaminants
and keep the heat down on your unit... If your unit is in a Environment of cigarette smoke this may not work... the cigarette smoke causes a build up of tar a sticky past like substance that will stick to the mother board and heat sinks like glue. when your done plug your unit back in take out the cd you used to cover the laser give it a pulse or two of air and put in a game and give it a try

remember you do this at your own risk always use small short pulses or blasts of air always keep the can upright and if you are not old enough to buy canned air have a parent help you remember you can damage your system if you blast it so hard it freezes moisture in the air it will short out your motherboard and kill your system
