Since brand new, epson stylus photo R280 intermittently (3 times in a year)shows low ink level in light magenta cartridge and stops working then the problem disappears inexplicably after a period of turning it off and on, unplugging it, blowing compressed air on the cartridge/machine contacts
Try using a soft cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol over the metal contacts. Make certain all residue to include spent ink or oil from your fingers have been removed. Let air dry. If your printers Print Head can be removed separately, that is the way to go when cleaning components. It has been known that Print Heads fail also and need replacement.

IT IS POSSABLE THAT THE PRINT HEAD ARE DIRTY THEY HAHVE MATCHING BOARDS TO THE TONER CARTRIDGE BOARDS UNPLUG THE MACHINE AND CLEAN THE PRINT HEAD WITH ALCOHOL IF IT DOESN'T WORK THE BOARDS HAVE FAILED

Well you certainly covered all troubleshooting that needs to be done and if head cleaning can´t do it -> you got to open it or have it serviced.

I would recommend cleaning the contacts (brass colored connections) with an eraser if might resolve the issue. It that does not resolve the issue it might be one of two other things. Either the printhead is cloged or the cable to the printerhead is damaged.
Good luck
