Hi Tori1206,
Usually Laptops use the F3 key as toggle for switching from laptop monitor another external monitor. So you might try depressing the F3 key to switch back to the laptop monitor...

My screen id dull, and hard to read, what can i do to make it brighter.

Hi

My laptop has some keys down on the right side showing lights on it and some laptops has them up the top of the keyboard i think

if you can see them press FN and the light up or down key to brighten the screen

If you cant find the keys check out the manual for your laptop if you have it

Or download from here http://welcome.hp.com/country/uk/en/support.html

My compaq nc8000 will try to boot up (only shows window xp, then goes to a blue screen with a lot of dots in it), but first shows zeros all across the screen not allowing you to do anything at all.

Hi, sounds like what is known as the blue screen of death. You can try reseting your operating system to an earlier time, before the problem began, by pressing the ESC or Del key during bootup, this will give you the option to boot into safe mode, from where you can attempt the reset. Or you can insert the CD that came with your compaq and perform a system restore. Both of these options will not remove any saved data.

Laptop shuts off

There are many factors which might be causing this problem...Maybe the laptop battery is not charging properly of else there's a failure in your O/S or even a faulty motherboard.

No Screen on Notebook Compaq nC8000

Unfortunately, sounds like the LCD backlight or backlight power board is bad. If there is any warranty, lucky you. Otherwise you need replacement parts. The output voltage on the powerboard needs to be checked to determine what needs to be replaced. Backlight Approx $20, powerboard Approx $65. This is the cost for parts alone if you are into electronics, otherwise a repair shop would end up charging you $200 - $300. There is a slight possibility that it is only a loose connection (cold solder joint or loose cable), but the laptop would still need to be opened, Lots of luck

AC Power and Battery Problem.....

Sounds like the battery or possibly the charging circits themselves are the problem. Can you try turning on the laptop with just the power cord in and no battery?
