>first run fax test, press set up go to tools menu then select run fax test, all entries should be pass >then check your connections, do you have one line or number for your fax and phone?or a separate line or another number for fax and another number for phone? >let me assume you only have one number for fax and phone.. >check connections, this should be downstream connection, the fax machine using the black phone cord provided by hp should be connected directly to the phone jack using line 1 at the back of the fax and the answering machine or the telephone should be connected to ext 2 or line 2 at the back of the fax...there should be no other devices phone or answering machine connected directly to the phone jack. >next set rings to answer on the fax machine higher than the answering machine...if your rings to answer on answering machine is 4 rings, set the fax to 6 rings...if it is a voice call the answering machine will pick it up at 4 rings then if it detects that it it a fax tone then it will transfer the call to fax. >also check if auto answer is on in your fax >you can check auto answer and rings to answer by pressing set up or menu button on your machine look for it in basic fax settings or advance settings >also check if your voice prompt for your answering machine is not too short there should be like at least 5 seconds after cutting your message to allow the machine to transfer the call to the fax if it is a fax tone.
Two items you need to do. Press user tools and go to fax settings from there you need to turn of auto fax reception and change to manual. (keep in mind, that when a fax comes in, meaning you pick up the phone and hear the fax tone, you will need to press the green start button to activate the fax sequence).
Also make sure you telephone is plugged into TEL and phone line into FAX/
Is your phone line plugged into the proper receptical on the fax? It should be plugged into the LINE slot, not the PHONE slot. The PHONE SLOT IS TO CONNECT A TELEPHONE TO THE FAX. IT IS NOT FOR THE INCOMING PHONE LINE. If your phone connection is correct, try calling your fax machine from a cell phone while you are at the fax machine. Listen on the cell to see if the fax machine picks up the line. If it does not, go into your fax machine's settings, either INITIAL SETUP FAX SETUP, or PHONE SETTINGS. You may have to try several settings to find one that works, depending on your fax machine. Try going to RECEIVE SETUP on your fax machines setup menu. Scroll through the settings, writing each down on paper. Try RING DELAY, RING TIME, NUMBER OF RINGS TO ANSWER , or any other settings relating to how your fax answers the phone line. Try changing each setting, one at a time, and try calling your fax to see if it answers. There may also be settings on your fax to set it up if an answering machine or telephone is on the same line.
Send will work on any phone lines
fax machines are often set to only answer 'secondary' ring tones, double triple or higher. When the line was repaired the phone company may have dropped the special tone off your secondary fax line number, fax will not answer without that tone.
Check in the fax answer settings, what the ring tone is, specific instruction on menu settings in your user guide,
Ring your fax line, and check the tone.
If single number fax/phone, check that the fax is set to asnwer all calls then pass on non faxes
This sounds like you have smart ring on your home line. Smart ring lets you have 2 seperate telephone numbers, One for fax and another for phone, but 2 distinctive rings all one one line. Check your manual to see if you have this feature and to set it up.
