I notice lots of extending wands use a spring-loaded thumb release that applies pressure to a steel roller that engages in any of a series of dimples pressed in the steel tube. When something goes wrong the roller falls out and is lost.
The button you push to release the wand has a spring to allow it to spring back after the button has been released. If that spring is missing the wand will not stay attached.
