If you publish a book with a publisher do you get a cut from every book they sell or do they buy the book off you?

It would depend on the contract, some contracts buy the rights to a book, which means (again depending on the wording) that they own it, they can make changes to it and your book may turn out very different from what you intended. It also means they can sell it.
Authors need expert legal advice.
Research is an important part of writing, and researching publishing contracts and all that go with them is even more so. http://www.fonerbooks.com/contract.htm

Can someone describe me like an author would introducing a character?

*insert your name* was the girl of *insert love interest*'s dreams. Her mocha colored hair curled into waves that the ocean would envy. She was smarter than any person he had ever met before. Every day he tried to wok up the courage to talk to the girl but he saw the way her beautiful grey eyes light up when she talked to her friends. He was intimidated. His friend group was small. what if he wasn't cool enough? still.. he longed to talk to her. short and petite, she was only 4'8 while he was almost 6 ft tall. she reminded him of a girl you'd see in fairytales.

Self-publishing on Amazon?

Keep on trying for an agent or send your work yourself to publishers who accept unagented material. go to the library or on line for these sources. Some big publishing houses have contests each year for self published books. good luck!
