Hi
I have managed to find 2 site for you for a manual for this machine. The first only offers a service manual here AKAI 1800SD Service Manual free download schematics eeprom repair info for...
and seems to be more advanced than you need as it seems to deal with a lot of dismantling and settings.
The second offers both a Service Manual and an Instruction/Owners Manual here:- Akai 1800SD Manual Reel to Reel 8 Track Tape Recorder HiFi Engine
Unfortunately you have to register and create an account for this one so it isn't quite as convenient, but its the only one I could find with an Instruction Manual.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers
This level of machine requires a service Technician with knowledge of the workings of this machine. The typical Technician will adjust it to work but often times it is a mess when they get done. There are two remaining Techs that know their stuff in the US. They are Russ Bachmann at New Jersey Factory Service. Then there is myself at Skywave Tape Deck Repair (Chicago area). Contact me if you need help in Chicago or Russ in the New Jersey or NY area. We both take shipped in units all the time. We both worked for Teac and have been doing the job since the 80's. [email protected] if you need more info on either.
Unless you know exacly what you are doing don't bother. It is a very complicated reel and expremely easy to put back together incorrecly. Send it off to Daiwa Sports service department. It'll either cost you £5 or nothing to have it serviced.

Did you ever get your schematic? I recently got the Model 260 and it has the original owner's manual. I could try scanning the page for you, if you still need the info (if you think that would help you).
