May be that there is a broken tooth on the escapement or the release lever is sticking

SOURCE: Smith Corona 235 DLE doesn't advance

Does the platen move or does the paper not advance? Check the paper release lever to make sure the feed wheels are snapped in place. If the platen does not move something in the paper feed motor area.

SOURCE: hitting Return just brings the carriage back to

Assuming this is a mechanical machine with elect5ric motor:
Verify the line space selector is not set on 0. (just inside LH platen knob)
Check that the LH platen knob does no have a push lever sticking out to the left.
Try placing a few drops of oil at the left portion of the platen, just left of the metal teeth (the linespace pawl may be jammed and not restoring to rest position)

SOURCE: smith corona sterling floating manual typewriter carriage return does travel all the way to the right

To make things clear are you not able to ON your PCusing the POWER button? or is this a resarting issue?
If POWER button issue please follow as below;
There should be the following issues related:1. Power supply issue2. Power or Reset button issue
-lets take above number 01 firstif it is power supply issue you will need to replace the power supplyby submitting it to a store or dealer.
-if it is number 02 we will need to check it as below:Remove the chasing (remove all screws and cover/ if there are no screwscheck the manual to remove the chasing)
check the cable which connects to your power switch to you PC.Remove this cable (you could see this cable mentioning as 'POWER' printedon the end of the cable which fits to the motherboard)
unplug/remove this cable from your motherboard and then switch on yourpc. See whether this switches the PC automattically. If so, the issueis with the POWER switch. You will need to replce this cable with yoursystem manufacturer. If this is not the case then the problem is withyour powersupply.

I have a Sterling Cartridge Smith-Corona typewriter and it shakes really bad when I turn the on switch, what is the problem?

It could be the machine is trying to return but is not successful. Help the carriage by hand up against the left margin, and see if this helps. Sometimes the centrifugal clutches on the motor need replaced, and sometimes the belts can cause this. Either way, you will probably not be able to fix it yourself.

I have a Smith Cornona Electra XT. It still turns on, but when I do turn it on, the carriage automatically goes back and forth non-stop and it's like you arre holding the return button down conti

Find the problem, some linkage is sticking and you have to trace it through. Spray with WD40, then when working spray with other light oil, cause WD40 does not stay. Most likely the carriage return release . Take bottom off and watch what it hits on the left side, Also the tab button locked down will do this.

Hitting Return just brings the carriage back to the start of the same line and doesn't insert a line break on a smith-corona

Carriage return problem

The tab button may be stuck or the carriage release lever is stuck or a broken escapement.
