Sounds like you're suffering the jungle DVD fever disease, most likely from excess salt air exposure(same thing happens over here on Hawaiian islands). So, just swap out the DVD for another one, and mark your calendar for same drill in another year.

Restart the notebook . It will help

It reads CDs, but DVDs: "Please insert a disk in drive.."

DVD SOHD-16P9S drive doesn't read any kind of CD or DVD

hi,there is no problem in drivers .
check the hardware parts
there are 2 possibilities in your case
1.the laser beam which reads the dvd or cds is malfunctioning
2.ensure that the cable & buses are properly connected

..
in case laser beam is damaged you got to get it repaired for proper functioning

CD Drive will not recognize CD's not made by Sony

WHen A CDROM Begins To Fail... It will Produce Symptoms Such As What You're Experiencing..
Typically This Happens With Multi Drives....
Multi Drives Are All In One Drives.... DVDrw/CDrw

And WHen They Begin To Fail.... THey Will Only Read Certain Brand CD/DVDs... (typically The Generic Ones Aren't readable/writable)

Or When Some Begin To Fail... THey'll Only Read CDs and not DVDs, or Visa Versa...

Slimtype dvdrw SOSW-852s jumpy when playing CDs. Shows CD with photographs ok.

Hi - I would suggest that buy a cleaner for the drive, and try playing you cd's afterwords. If it still playing up then copy some music from the computer onto a brand new cd and play back. If that still has the same fault then you may need to but a new drive.

I hope that helps you.

Please let me know how you get on.

Philip

CD DVD RW NOT BEING SEEN IN MY COMPUTER

Hi,
Sorry I can't offer any help, but then again, even Liteon couldn't help and posted a notice on their website a while back stating that these units were subject to drive failure.

" DVD-RW Drive SOSW-852S
NOTE: This is a system integrator product. Due to compatibility concerns, which may cause drive failure, we are not able to provide any firmware upgrade for this product. For technical support, kindly contact your vendor."

Acer TravelMate Notebook 4502LMi DVDRW SOSW-852S (PRS9) Replacement

My recommendation is to get the exact replacement that Acer recommend. OR a third party equivalent.

In saying that as long as one has a warranty for said device, then really anything else is a moot point.

I think you will find that the Panasonic drive will be more than suitable.
