Whirlpool Side by Side Freezer - Ice Build Up in Drain

We have the same problem, same exact model, only a few years old - ice build up at the bottom of my freezer side of my Whirlpool freezer is blocking the drain. The freezer has ice build up all over but the refrigerator side is too warm due to the fact that the vents to the fridge are blocked with ice. The repair man said to let it thaw - we are in the process of this now. I am wondering why the ice would build up in the first place? Seems as if this is a common problem. We can hear water draining into the pan...

After the drain thaws , ( I use about a 4 inch aluminum fence tie or if need longer , aluminum wire with no insulation ,) insert it into the drain hole as far as it will go with no force , and wrap the top end about 1 turn around the calrod defrost heater , This transfers heat to the hole so the ice will not freeze up the hole . Before doing this step , use a hose and blow into the drain to possible clear out any debris which could have accumulated in the drain trap .

Hi,
the reason for this ice build-up is that your auto defrost heater didn’t come on. this makes the freezer side cold and the refrigerator side warm.
try keeping a pot of hot water in the freezer to completely defrost the freezer.
make sure that the gasket doesn't have any blocks.
this should solve your problem.
cheers.

Loud "clattering" noise from freezer area when refrigerator runs

There is a fan in the back of the freezer that runs when the compressor is running. It sounds like you have ice build up around the fan.
You could have one of these problems: (Sorted by most likely to least likely)
1) Auto Defrost timer, defrost bi-metal or defrost heater is defective - the unit will go into auto defrost about twice a day, if this fails you will have lots of ice built up around the cooling fins and sometimes on the fan. Pull the back off the inside of the freezer and check for ice build up around the cooling fins, there should be none or very little if its running normal.

2) Bad door gasket - if the freezer door is leaking warm moist air inside the freezer it could be condensing around the fan causing ice (you will also see ice build up on things inside your freezer too).

3) Plugged drain - the drain leads from the freezer down to the drain pain under the fridge. If this is plugged ice will build up on the bottom of the freezer and potentially around the fan.

Freezer model EV171NYMS04 we have ice build up on

There is a drain the back of the freezer that is frozen. Your trickle of water comes from the ice that melts off of the refrigeration coils during the defrost cycle. You need to turn off the freezer, then remove the rear cover from the back wall to expose the coils. With a hair dryer, melt all of the ice. You will find a drain under the coils. Melts all of the ice in this drain so water can get out of the freezer. When this drain is clear, you can put everything back together, and your freezer should work normally.

Ice build up in the bottom of my upright freezer

If it's a frost free model, it could be caused by a plugged defrost drain. Every time it goes through a defrost cycle the water is supposed to drain into the compressor compartment. You can defrost it by unplugging it for a day or two and then remove the panel covering the evaporator coil. You should be able to see the drain tray under the coil and find out whats blocking it.

GE Side by side runs constantly.

EASY FIX!!! The drain is clogged up. All you have to do is take the back wall to the freezer off (lower section in freezer) And you will see another layer of frozen ice at the bottom (behind back wall). Get you a hair dryer and start melting. After a few minutes u will start to see a drain whole(size of a nickle in middle) concentrate you efforts on the drain hole. Now get some wire or something and stick down in hole, then pull out over and over till finally it drains all the build up water around the hole! GOODLUCK!!!
