Black screen in REC mode, bars across the screen in Playback mode

I recently took my ZR80 out to record my golf swing after about 6 mo of none use. It functioned perfectly for the first 15-20 minutes. Then the picture starting having break up and video static. Then nothing. Still recorded sound. Playback of old recording show solid bars horizontal across the screen and sound. Do you think this can be fixed?? If so can you do the work??

My advice is that you should by a DV cleaning cassette. Put this in the camera and run it for 10 to 20 seconds only. running the cleaning cassette for a long time may damage the head.
good luck!

Horizontal grey bars across screen.

Hi,
This sounds like it is the Tape recording function that is at fault. Unfortunately, it's also one of the most difficult to correct without a scope and test jig.
However,
If it is more than 5 years old, it may be suffering from component failure.
In particular the Electrolytic capacitors in these small cams seem to fail first due to temperature and humidity changes. They can leak, dry up or corrode, so it may be worth looking inside at the control boards to spot any physical signs of deterioration.
This shows typical surface mount capacitors - silver cylinders with black segment denoting negative -

If you want to have it done for free check the canon service note - it may help and will not cost you a broken penny. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=227&modelid=9740&keycode=2112&id=48266

VCR Play Back is OK, but Recording produces Blue Screen on playback

If the heads are TOO dirty, a head cleaner will not help. If you are cinfident enough to open up the recorder, then they can be cleaned manually.

Disconnect the VCR from the mains.

Remove the screews from the side and back (if applicable) of the lid.

Remove the lid.

Look at the large drum (set at a slight angle) If you gently rotate the drum you will see 2 or 4 small sensors set into the drum.

Tear of a clean piece of A4 paper about 1inch square.

Hold between thumb and first finger and rub the centre of the paper against each sensor in turn. Make sure the edge of the paper does not catch the sensor.

After each sensor check the paper for dirt (black marks) and change paper if need be.

Try a recording / playback.

Repeat if necessary.

Black bars in the picture

For Models: CC4352, CC4362, CC4393. Your camcorder has a wide format recording mode that lets you make recordings compatible with the 16x9 format. When 16x9 is activated, the camcorder records black bars at the top and bottom of the picture to produce the wide-screen (movie) effect. This is also known as "letterbox" recording. Do not use this mode unless you have a compatible 16x9 TV. When played on a regular TV, black bars appear on the screen. If the 16x9 feature is activated on your camcorder and you want to turn it off, press REC/PAUSE to pause recording, and repeatedly press DIGITAL EFFECTS until no digital effects display appears.
