Hooking up a second ACER monitor as an extended desktop

I am adding a second ACER monitor to my Macintosh setup. I am having trouble getting an extended desktop. Currently I can only get a mirrored desktop (same image on both screens.

I have 2 acer AL2016W's and have the same problem. The earlier ones with the VGA only are the problem from what I can see, they just don't play nicely with the video card for some reason.
First, on your main monitor, click "Show displays in menu bar" on your monitor control panel. This will let you set the resolution for each monitor from the main one, click on the little monitor icon on the top right screen to do this.
If that doesn't work try this:
Connect one acer as the main monitor and one crappy vga crt monitor as the second.
Set mirrored desktop in the system preferences so that the crappy CRT is displaying the exact same resolution as the acer. (1680x1050 59.9Hz)
Disable mirrored desktop. You should now have an acer and a crappy CRT both running 1680x1050 in extended desktop mode.
Shut down, reconnect the acer in place of the crappy CRT.
This should "trick" your video card into having the right resolution, otherwise you'll just get the stupid "input not supported" screen, with no ability to auto configure or use any of the built in controls.

Add monitor

to add a second monitor first make sure your laptop has a VGA connection (newer laptops have replaced these with HDMI or DVI, if you have these connections then use them)

now plug the VGA into the port, if the laptop is setup right it will pick it up automatically. if not you will have to do it yourself

so first right click on the desktop and go to screen resolution
in this new window there will be an option to either duplicate or extend with the choice of which monitor to use.

set it up how and as you wish if you are going for more than one screen it is recommended you buy a desktop with a graphics cards that supports up to 3 monitors

Dual Monitor problems...

When you run multiple monitors in "extend" mode you will only get the icons and the "Start" button on one monitor. All it does is spread your desktop across both monitors.

Dual Monitors. #1 works fine. Plug inb #2 and #1 goes to sceeen saver and #2 stays blank.

Both monitors must be plugged in when the computer is started for the second monitor to be detected, and you must configure the second monitor once the computer has started
In windows XP: control panel -> display -> settings tab -> select second display -> check "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor" -> click apply
In windows vista/7: control panel -> adjust screen resolution -> select second display and then under "multiple displays" select "Extend desktop to this display"

All Acer Laptops Compatible wih all Acer LCD Monitors ? Is there any thing specific to look into when an LCD Monitor has to be Purchased to be connected to an USB Port of an Acer Laptop?

You can hook up any brand of monitor to your Acer laptop.

The only thing you may have to check for is that the connector on the back of the Acer (and all laptops for that matter) is a VGA type. This is the older style of monitor connector. Some new monitors come with a HDMI connector. All you need to do is buy an adaper, put that on the end of the cable and plug it in.

When you get the monitor plugged into the laptop and powered up then you will need to go into you display setting and check to see the external monitor is detected and how you want to use it. You can extend your desktop ie make you screen size cover or use both monitors. You can also set it to put your desktop out to the monitor and perhaps one or two other options depending on your laptop model. Once you have it setup it should use those setting automatically the next time you plug a monitor in.

  5. (Optional) To change the direction the desktop will extend (left or right to match how the displays are physically set up), select a monitor and drag it to the desired position.

Does the Acer Aspire R1600 support extended desktop/dual monitors with the VGA and HDMI ports?

Yes it does. After hooking up the external monitor simply right click anywhere on the desktop, select properties, settings, and then change the monitor profile to your desired setting.

Good Luck,

Trouble hooking external Viewsonic monitor to Toshiba laptop

If I understand You are using a Monitor connecting the Monitor...
and the background is shared byboth the display however the Cursor stays only on one of them at a time. However it can be toggled among the 2.

If yes,
then this Feature is called the Extended Display.
Use the same Key Combination that you would use for external Display one More time and it should Work.
