This will depend on which type of computer and operating system you have if you are referring to formatting your hard drive to a specific format file system NTFS or FAT choose the Ntsf file system is more secureNtfs is more powerful than Fat or Fat32 and includes features required for hosting Directory as well as other important security features . You can use features such as Active Directory and Domain - based security only by choosing Ntfs your file systemIts easy to convert Partitions to Ntfs . The set up programs conversion makes it easy whether your partitions used Fat or Fat32 or the older version of Ntfs .This kind of conversion keeps your files intact (unlike formatting a partition). If you do not need to keep your files intact and you have a FAT or FAT32 partition, it is recommended that you format the partition with NTFS rather than convert from FAT or FAT32. Formatting a partition erases all data on the partition and allows you to start with a clean drive.
Connect it to your Mac and open Disk Utility. Find the disk in the left pane of the Disk Utility window, click on it, then click the Erase tab in the right pane. Choose your format, then click the Erase button. If the disk does not appear in the left pane or is grayed out, click the Erase or Partition tab first, then select the disk.
Note: the "MS-DOS" format is the FAT-32 filing system. You will have to partition the volume (Partition tab) to use it since FAT-32 cannot cover the entire drive in one partition (I think it is limited to 80 GB). Microsoft won't let Apple use an NTFS volume for Write operations, but FAT-32 can be read and written by both Mac and Windows systems. If you think you may want to use the drive to share files with the PC, make two partitions - one formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and a smaller one formatted as FAT-32.
File Allocation Table (FAT): A file system used by MS-DOS and other Windows-based operating systems to organize and manage files. The file allocation table (FAT) is a data structure that Windows creates when you format a volume by using the FAT or FAT32 file systems. Windows stores information about each file in the FAT so that it can retrieve the file later.
NTFS: An advanced file system that provides performance, security, reliability, and advanced features that are not found in any version of FAT. For example, NTFS guarantees volume consistency by using standard transaction logging and recovery techniques. If a system fails, NTFS uses its log file and checkpoint information to restore the consistency of the file system. In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, NTFS also provides advanced features such as file and folder permissions, encryption, disk quotas, and compression.
Ok this fix will erase all Partitions on the drive, Make sure you have all data back'd up.
Open Command:
Go to Start menu > All programs > Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. OrType cmd in Start menu search box and hit Ctrl+ Shift+ Enter. You should have a black MS-DOS prompt on your screen.Type DISKPART in and press enter.Another window will open Type: list diskIt will the display list of devices with memory storage.Find your disk, It should be in a Table(kinda). You have to locate it by its size. so look for 1TB(1000GB)In this Example its Disk 2, yours may differ. type in: Select disk 2 Execute the rest one by one:CLEANCREATE PARTITION PRIMARYSELECT PARTITION 1FORMAT FS=FAT32ASSIGNEXIT Wait for one command to complete before running another You should be left with a working FAT32 Device :P RegardzSinn3D
NTFS
1)allows access local to w2k w2k3 XP win NT4 with SP4 & later may get access for somefile.
2)Maximum size of partition is 2 Terabytes & more.
3)Maximum File size is upto 16TB.
4)File & folder Encryption is possible only in NTFS. FAT 32
1)Fat 32 Allows access to win 95 98 win millenium win2k xp on local partition.
2)Maximum size of partition is upto 2 TB.
3)Maximum File size is upto 4 GB.
4)File & folder Encryption is not possible.
You will not be unable to access your files on other computers because of the file permissions that go along with NTFS. I would recommend Fat32 if you are thinking of using those files everywhere you go, but stick with NTFS if you want the security.
Im not sure why the volume label appears in blue but im pretty sure its not virus related.
