The steering gear box has an adjustment screw on the top cover. Loosen the lock nut and turn the screw clockwise until the slop is reduced. Jack the front end up so both wheels turn freely. Push the wheel right and left while watching the suspension components. If they move up and down. The control arm and ball joints need replacing. Have it done at a good shop that does alignments.

SOURCE: when turning the steering wheel of my 2003 Saturn

mine did the same thing. Where the steering column goes through the firewall (floor) there is a rubber seal. That seal has gotten dry. Apply a small amount of lube where the shaft goes through and turn the steering wheel. This helped eliminate my squeal.

I have a 2003 Saturn ion-3. Last year the power steering went out and the shop had me replace the steering rack for $1100. Recently it has gone out again, what else might be the problem?

My power steering went out on a 2007 ion. I took it to a GM dealership with Goodwrench service repair. There was a recall & they fixed it FREE. I haven't had a problem since. That was oct 2011.

I have a loud growling noise in front end of my 2003 saturn ion

most likely a front wheel hub bearing. You have to remove the bearing from the steering spindle and replace it.

My 2003 Saturn Ion has a squeaky steering problem. The wheel groans and squeaks every time you turn the wheel

I would get to a shop and have the ball joints, tie rod ends, and strut bearings checked. Any and all of them may cause that problem on a car this old. This is one of the few problem areas I would let a Saturn dealer inspect the car, as they may well have seen hundreds just like it. Once they tell you what is wrong, get out of there and get the work done somewhere else. Do not be shy about buying your own parts and paying a shop to put them in. Pick a shop which does alignments as the car will need that when the parts have been replaced.

The ignition is locked and the car wont start.

Try Penetrating Oil Such as (PB Blaster) In the LOCK first . It is Hard for me to Connect the Accident to The Lock not Working It Really Had to have Hit it Hard , Unless The Front Wheel on that side Was Hit This Would Effect the Steering Hence the Ignition. Lock. Try the Penetrating Oil on it Its Obvious you Understand the Connection between Steering Wheel & Ignition Lock If this Fails The Ignition Lock Should Be Replaced. I hope you Have Luck with The Lube Fix As It Is SO Much LESS EXPENSIVE Than Replacing the Lock, Good Luck
