Question about Cycling
If the current tire is not 26 x 1 3/8 you can probably put on a wider tire, but don't go overboard, and be sure it will clear the frame on the sides. For example, if you have 26 x 1.75 then 26 x 2.0 would be fine, 26 x 2.25 may be too much.

Typically, 24x1.375 (1-3/8") wheels are either 540mm ("E5") or 547mm ("S5") in diameter. (Yes, annoying as it is, 24 inches doesn't always mean 24 inches!)
If you're planning on fitting a 24x1.75 tire, make sure it is the proper diameter to fit the rim. Since the wheel was from a Huffy, it's probably an S5, or 547mm rim.
Any 24x1.75 tire will probably fit the rim. As long as the tire's bead seats on the rim, the 3/8" difference in width should not present any problems.

There are two types of valve stems, schrader ( like the valve stems on your car ) and presta. See images on this page http://www.sheldonbrown.com/brandt/presta-schrader.html Since you are asking I assume you have presta valves. You can get an adapter to convert the presta valves for use with a schrader pump. Unscrew the small knurled nut on top of the presta valve to open it, press down and release the small top to ensure the valve is free to move. Snug up the top when it is full.
