Question about Samsung HC-P4241W 42" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

Samsung HCM4216W Picked up one of these heavy tvs but color looks as if it has a light halo in the middle and darkens as it progresses outwards reds look like reds but overall color looks more green. I'm assuming the 3 lamps should be replaced?

ll projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

Screen looks 3D
Colors don't line up
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed or warped.
TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Big red circle in the middle of the picture

I have a red curve at the top left and the bottom right . I tried adjusting the colors at the back but no fix .

The psicture continues to darken difficult to see the picture.

Sounds like your convergence circuits shorted and took out the resistors. This is fairly common.

Red blinking light

It's most likely convergence -- the small board up and to the right inside the back of the TV, which has two large amp Ic's attached to it..
Unplug the +/- 20v line on the fron left corner of that board (red in color) and then try and power on the set... If the set comes on the board needs to be repaired and it's an easy unplug and two screws that mount it inside.

Well, fortunately the television that you purchased has an auto-convergence feature. What is happenning is that your color lamps are misaligned, did it get moved at all recently? Anyway, in your menu you should see a "Convergence" menu, and inside that menu, a section called "Perfect Focus". Run Perfect Focus in this sequence: Green --> Red --> Blue After that your picture should look great, if not try tinkering with the manual adjustments on the "Convergence" menu. When you say skilled I'd STRONGLY suggest be a CET or better to tackle this job or I'd give you a one-in-a-thousand chance of doing it successfully... That said, it's pretty straight forward - the unit has to be torn down to light box level and the crt removed... After disassembly of the coolant chamber from the crt it is recommended by Samsung to install the coolant overflow kit, Samsung bullentin tip # 20040827001. P/N: Aa91-00607a / Bp96-00645a
