Possible that the drum drive for the magenta is not engaging properly. On the control panel go to troubleshooting and then diagnostic test and then component test and test all the cartridge/drum drives.

Thanks for responding. My printer didn't have the same options as you mentioned but I went to Menu/Diagnostics/Component Test/Cartridge Motors and it had me remove one of the toners and it ran something but didn't give me any results. It just gave me the option to quit diagnostics.

Those tests rotate the drive systems so that you can determine if the noise is coming from the drive train. If you did not hear the noise that you heard with a cartridge installed would indicate either the portion of the drive that goes into the cartridge is bad or the cartridge itself is bad.

The noise goes away with the magenta cartridge out. I have swapped out the magenta cartridge with 2 others and all make same noise. So you think it would be the portion of the drive that goes into the cartridge is bad? Do you know of a good link I can use that would show me how to fix that? Thanks again for your help.

I couldn't find anything on a drum drive. Would they call that something else? Thanks

On this engine the cartridges are all driven by the main drive assembly. On this model you pretty much have to replace the whole assembly if something is broken.

Grinding noise

I just chatted with Dell support about this since I have the same problem of the grinding noise on my C1760NW Dell printer. I have it plugged into an APC backup battery which acts like surge protector (unless power goes out then battery kicks in). He said the printer needs more power and that surge protectors and battery backups are not good for this printer since they restrict the power which sends less power to the motor and fuser than what it was designed for. So with less power from the APC backup/surge protector, the motor moves very slow and may not fuser the toner to the page correctly and can cause permanent damage over time. So I plugged into the wall directly instead and the grinding noise went away immediately even when printing 10-15 pages right after plugging into wall, but then the noise came back when I printed a bigger job. So for now I'm letting it cool down for a couple hours and crossing my fingers that the damage is not permanent. So... answer is plug it into the wall directly for maximum power and hope that your printer is not permanently damaged. By the well, Dell support chat was awesome.

HP CP3525 loud grinding noise when calibrating after printing

Sounds like you have a stripped gear somewhere. Probably somewhere in the paper drive assembly. Take it to your nearest printer repair shop, because tech support may not be much help with that.

Copies are coming out with a dark horizontal lines and printer is making a rather loud sound when paper is in printing process.

Two things that can cause print quality issues and noise.
1. The toner cartridge can cause lines and sometimes can make a squeaking noise.
2. The fuser can cause streaking and smudges on the prints and can cause a grinding noise if the drive gear is worn or the bushings are worn.

Lexmark C510 is making grinding noises while printing large jobs

I found another posting stating that the culprit was the black toner cartridge. Sure enough I changed our black cartridge and the grinding noise has stopped. No wonder the grinding noise was not happening all the time only when the black cartridge got low. Thanks for the help!

HP Color Laserjet 2840 now makes ear-splitting whine every time

Did the noise start right after you replaced a toner? If so it must be a bad toner which is causing the gears to grind. If this noise happened out of the blue then it might be a bad fuser drive gear which is the gears that connect the fuser to the machine.

Color Laserjet 2550 Loud Noise when starting up and printing

Remove toner cartirdge and check gears on cart as well as all of the gears you can see inside the unit for any signs of wear. You may also need to remove the fuser assembly and perform the same task with the gears back there. MAKE SURE THE POWER HAS BEEN TURNED OFF AND THE PRINTER UNPLUGGED FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO TOUCH THE FUSER. IT WILL BE HOT!!! Most frequently these kinds of noises from the printer are due to gears slipping. Sometimes simply reseating the fuser assembly or toner cartridge will fix it. If there appears to be excessive wear on any of the gears, you will need to replace them.

Grinding noise only when printing a large print job

It is passable the grinding noise is coming from one of the toner cartridges in the printer.

Check for any toner cartridges which are stiff or difficult to turn by hand
Replace and refilled toners or compatible toners with original manufactures toners.
If you have alternative toners available replace each toner in turn to see if the cause can be identified to a particular toner.

Every page covered in magenta and black won't print across the page

This is caused by toner contamination in the laser scanner unit, it is quite a complex job removing and cleaning the laser scanner. I would suggest you contact HP regarding the repair.
