I have tried to format this thing and the comp. says unable to format. I've tried pushing the menu button to get the menu to come up(as suggested) .....No luck. This is getting frustrating. It says there's no free space yet shows no playlist and won't play anything either. Please Help!!!
I can get the menu to come up and I can go to settings. But when i scroll down to USB it won't let me open the submenu. I'm ready to trash the MP3 player.I can get the menu to come up and I can go to settings. But when i scroll down to USB it won't let me open the submenu. I'm ready to trash the MP3 player.

I had the same problem. Found the fix in this document STR-K880 service manual On the amp, while powered off: "While depressing the INPUT MODE button, press the POWER button to turn on the main power." You may need to do this more than once. This switches command mode between AV1 and AV2.
What size is the memory card. If it's larger than 4GB then it won't work in the 5118. Try using another card. Don't format it in your computer but do format it in the camera before trying to take pictures.
Since you have reached the 999 track limit, it is possible your CF card may have been corrupted. On page 28 of your manual you should find the instructions for formatting your CF card. "How to Format a CF Card." This may get you going again.
keep pressing F10 button as you start the comp. you will enter the boot menu. Select the BOOT FROM CD option and this will start the windows installation.
SKIP THE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER! JUST DRAG AND DROP AS BELOW:
(to clear or 'erase' skip to format -below)
1ST: Just try to 'reset' by holding down the main center button AND pushing UP on the lock/off-on button, for about 8-9 seconds,
It will then 'refresh' the database, shouldn't lose anything,
OR:
Most other problems can be fixed ultimately by the following; REFORMAT the SansaDisk Clip by finding it in My Computer and right click then just 'format' the thing. THEN drag and drop new music into it (or books), DRAG and DROP, you apparently erase the thing with a 'FORMAT' ....BUT - it's .sys files remain and it is like new {as in empty}
This usually fixes almost anything, should even erase a virus (I'm guessing) but shouldn't hurt it.
Good Luck!
-simple 'drag and drop' from my MUSIC folder seems to work just fine for me...
if you can use yor camera as a card reader. ie plug it into your comp and the drive shows up then use something like this:
http://www.datadoctor.in/downloads/digital-camera-data-recovery-demo.exe
if you've used it many times since the format it might not find anything
good luck
Try using the format option on the mp3 itself. Hold the "menu" button, scroll through the options to the "advanced menu". Select it n select format. It worked for me.
I can get the menu to come up and I can go to settings. But when i scroll down to USB it won't let me open the submenu. I'm ready to trash the MP3 player.
