Duo-Therm RV Roof top A/CI recently bought a portable generator to power my A/C unit in my 2007 Four Winds 26L Trailer. When the temperature is higher than say 75 degrees outside it kicks off the breaker on my generator. the generator is 3500 watts cont. and 4400 watts surge. Can you tell me what is wrong
I take it you have RV plugged into generator. Hopefully direct with no extension cords. Are you using a 30 to 15 amp adapter to plug into generator? What is the rating of the breaker on the generator that keeps tripping, suspect it's only 15 amp?
Generator manual should say, but I would hope if 30 amp plug on generator, it is a 30 amp breaker but would be good to confirm.
Try running your fridge on propane, if it's on hydro, as well as water heater. You have to remember that the 30 amps is distributed to all electrical appliances that require hydro, so if they are all on hydro instead of propane, it will reduce the amount of amperage available to run AC. Also, if you can, test a receptacle or 2 for voltage reading & see if maybe generator not putting out 110-120 voltage . If the generator is supplying lower incoming voltage, that will cause all hydro appliances to draw more amperage than normal.
Low freon is a possibility but I'm not leaning that way yet. Has anyone done a thorough cleaning of evaporator & condenser coils & fins since new? You see, when they are dirty,(even though you clean filters at ceiling assembly regularly. ) they work harder, compressor heats up more etc & will cause compressor etc to draw more current. Also, were you running fridge etc on hydro before I asked?

yes Rv plugged in. it has a 25' 30 amp cord.
the plug says 30 amp on the generator I don't have any idea what the breaker size is. it does not say.
i have turned everything to propane and the only thing is the A/C running.
the generator can start it and run but only for a few moments but when the temp drops it works flaulesly.
the A/C unit is a Duo-Therm by Dometics. I was wondering if it is low on freon if that would make it drew harder.
yes. the fridge was on hydro from the get go. I always herd that you could only run the A/C and maybe another appliance but that most of the time only the A/C.
I returned the generator got another one without any problem but the problem persists.
before i go back to the generator place i want to make sure i am not overlooking something with the A/C unit.
the breaker in the trailer is 20 amp and it never pops. that is why i thought it was the generator.
is there something you might recommend me checking before asking for Another generator?
i really appreaciate your help here. thanks
