That's interesting... I doubt it is the filter if the new filter did the same. It might help if you take a fan and blow it through the area behind the filter, or maybe even spraying some Lysol in it, because my best guess is that something inside the purifier is what is causing the smell. Hope this helps!

your Ionic breeze purifier, I wanted to report that they are not being
manufactured anymore because of heath concerns. New model built from
2008 use a completely different technology. Parts are also not
distributed anymore, and the new Sharper Image does not provide any support for the old model. I suggest replacing the ionic purifier with a different air purifier.
My husband came home and checked out the unit. He discovered that the cord was bad, so he replaced it with one we had. It works fine. The cord plugs into the unit at one end and into the wall at the other end. There was no rewiring needed. Problem solved!
