On most cars, you need to slightly turn steering wheel and then turn key inside ignition switch. As for brake pedal being locked, do you mean it is all the way down to the floor ? Try to see if there is something preventing pedal from releasing.

SOURCE: key won't turn, steering wheel locked, brakes locked.

With the key in the ignition, tap on the key with something heavy like a pair of pliers, screwdriver etc. It will cause the pin inside the mechanism to drop, and the iginition will turn. Happened to me today, worked like a charm.

SOURCE: Steering wheel locked in place, key will not turn...

Very likely the steering thrust stored in the tires attempting to turn back is forcing excessive tension against the steering lock.

Try (very hard) to turn the steering wheel either direction while turning the key gently.

If that solves it you can avoid this by letting go of the steering after stopping to park, turn off the ignition slowly (engine off, pause, then key out). This will ensure that the steering wheel comes to rest prior to locking the column.

My steering wheel is totally locked. Doesn't move AT ALL and my key won't turn. Parked at a VERY slight incline. 2004 Ford Expedition. Now what? Please help.

The steering has an interlock with the brake pedal. The brake pedal must be pushed to release the steering wheel and ignition. There is a switch that is struck by the brake pedal lever. Often a driver's foot will move or break this switch and it will not work. You must look under the drivers' dash and service this switch. Then the wheel should move. Sometimes there are situations where the steering gets turned to an extreme and the parts get locked in place. When you parked it there was power assist and it took out any play in the system. This can happen if the wheels are turned to an extreme in one direction or another.

Why wont my key turn on 2002 chevy impala I need a diagram of swich

If the steering wheel is lock, try holding the steering wheel right in the middle while you jiggle the key, the sweet spot is the mid point, now i get the steering wheel is locked but it still moves a little bit, and press the brake pedal,at the same time, 1=transmission in park. 2=steering wheel in mid point,.3=depressed brake pedal 4=wriggle the key all the way back then go forward..as far as wiring, bypass well i dont wanna teach nobody how to steal a car, gm its got wiring schematics on line.

Why won't my 2002 Volvo s80 shift out of park?

All vehicles have a safety feature that won't allow a vehicle to be shifted into gear without the drivers foot being on the brake pedal . Shifter interlock system . There is a electrically controlled solenoid that locks the shifter ,when you step on the brake pedal an electrical signal un locks the shifter ,allowing the gear selector to move.

My 1998 Dodge Caravan key will not turn over steering wheel is locked as well as brakes..how can i unlock it to be able to put in neutral???

if the steering wheel is turn all the way one way and locked by the steering wheel lock then you will have to turn the steering wheel more and try turning the key.sometimes when the steering wheel is turned all the way one way and locked the pressure that is against the lock will sometimes not allow the key to turn.if the wheel is in the straight ahead position it may be the ignition key lock is worn and needs replacing.

Girlfriend put it in park turned off the engine and went in to a store. came out and key wont turn, brake pedal is very firm and the gear selecter cable seems like it in a different place, and the steering...

Either the shifter linkage is out of adjustment or the park/neutral start switch is bad. First thing would be to check the brake switch behind the brake pedal to make sure it has not moved out of placement

Key is locked in the ignition

To fix your problem, you have to turn the steering wheel either to the left or right as much as you can, then try to turn the key in the ignition. When the steering wheel locks, the key won't turn. By manually holding the steering wheel out of the lock position, the key will turn again and you're steering column will be back to normal. Also try holding the brake pedal down and turning the key and steering wheel at the same time
