There are wash, rinse, and dry cycles that all take time. Cycle settings allow you to vary this. For example, potscrubber mode will take longer than normal wash. You can opt for no heat drying to shorten the cycle, but then the dishes will be wet and can have possible spotting. Experiment with the controls and find the settings that give you the results you want in the least amount of time. But just FYI, an hour isn't that long for a dishwasher to cycle - many run longer than that.

I am trying to clean earthen pottery plates in my dish washer and after washing half of the plates disappear.

The Kenmore PRO also has an Ultra Wash Filtration High Energy Filtration System that helps the majority of us with hard water. It features 2 spray arms, and a Turbozone that blasts away the most gunked up items you can make a mess on.

The Kenmore PRO also features 6 cycles. The High Energy Smart Wash Cycle is the most advanced and versatile. It actually senses the load size, soil amount, toughness of soil and uses minimal water and energy. The Smart Wash Cycle runs from 110 minutes to a max of 194 depending on toughness of soil and uses from 4.2 gallons of water to 6.9.

The Pots Pans Cycle also makes some adjustments depending on soil level and takes from 140 minutes to 203 minutes to complete. It uses 4.8 to 6.9 gallons of water.

There is also a self-adjusting Normal Cycle that runs from 110 minutes to 193 minutes and uses 4.2 gallons to 6.9 gallons of water.

The Kenmore PRO also has a self-adjusting China Gentle Cycle that provides a light wash and gentle dry for delicate items and runs from 105 minutes to 194 minutes and uses 4.2 gallons to 6.9 gallons of water.

It also has a 1 Hour Wash that runs for 58 minutes and uses 8.0 gallons of water and a 15 minute Quick Rinse Cycle that uses 2.1 galllons of water.

The Kenmore PRO also has 5 other options that are additional to the Cycles. Each option adds time and water to the selected cycle. They are:

TurboZone, HI Temp Wash which raises the water temperature to 120 degrees F, a Steam Sanitize which raises the final rinse to 155 degrees F, a Top-Rack Only Option, and a Heated Dry Option.

The Kenmore PRO also has a Delay Option that allows you to run the dishwasher on off-peak hours and delays the start time up to 6 hours.

I have not field-tested all these options yet, becaue I am such a skeptic -- and picky about my dishes, I usually go ahead and always use the TurboZone, the Hi-Temp Wash, the Steam Sanitizer, and the Heated Dry Option. But, hey if you are plunking down $1500 for a dishwasher--you should make use of all your options. I'll keep this review up-to-date as my dates with the Kenmore PRO progress with dinner parties and my very precious china, but for now (mostly because of the "ClangBanger") our good china is safely stored in the cabinets.

My dishwasher takes 2.5 hours to run, what's wrong with it?

Check user guide. Check the program you have switched. Two hours or little more is OK. But check your inlet water flow to the machine. If it is slow then also you will get this delay.

My dishwasher takes 2 1/2 hours to run. Is this normal?

Smart wash: 2 hours Anti-bacterial wash: 2.5 hours Normal wash: 2 hours China/Gentle: 1.5 hours Quick Rinse: 10 minutes
Note: If water temperature is low the times shown above will be extended to allow for water heating time.
This information is from page 14 of the manual.

Kenmore Dishwasher 587.15163401 knob stuck mid-cycle

See if it is stuck on a water heat cycle. if the heater circuit or the thermostat is not working properly it will continue to run looking for a rise in temperature. If these are in working order the timer it self could be sticking and not advancing.

It keeps on running for over an hour

The average dishwasher cycle is 2 hours. If it is equipped with turbidity sensors it could run longer.

Dishwasher runs for 3 hours

You may be running the sani-wash or heated drying. The heat element in these things takes a long time.

Check these and turn them off - then try another wash cycle and time it to see - should be one hour or less

My Kenmore ultraGuard has never heated the water and throws food

Sounds like a bad timer. Its not right. I disagree with your repairman's assessment. A typical wash cycle for a dishwasher is 20 -30 min.

Kenmore

Make sure you run water in your sink until it is hot before you start the dishwasher. On the newer dishwashers they will fill and drain until the water is hot enough so it takes longer if it starts with cold water. Normal time for a basic wash could take about 45 min.
