Start up I tried to update my G4 Laptop software by going online to Apple. Now my computer will not get past the opening white screen with the Apple in the middle. It has the rotating load symbol in the lower-middle of the screen, but that's all. Any tricks I can use to access the harddrive? -Don [email protected]

`Same problem - won't get pastt he apple screen with the timer. Have to hold down the start button for 8 secs to shut down but same thing happens. Have tried rebooting in safe mode (holding down the shift key whisl starting up) but no difference. Have not yet tried from the start up disc. Any suggestions would be warmly received.

Try rebooting into safe mode, then emptying your trash and restarting to normal operation. In safe mode, all internet is dissabled, so dont go trying to fire up the bluetooth or wi fi. The systme trashes unneccessary fonts and cache that can complicate the boot up.

If that does not remedy, try getting anothe rmacintosh running 10.3 or higher and a firewire cable. Boot your powerbook into TARGET DISK MODE and from the other mac go to UTILITIES and run permissions on your powerbook ( it should be on the left pane in DISK UTILITIES )

These are a few quick fixes, if they dont remedy the situation, keep me posted and try providing more info, like which version of osx, what you were downloading, and what apps were open when it was last functional.

Keep me posted.

Apple logo and loading symbol

If you have another MAC computer available, you can create a USB key to solve this problem:

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/apple-in-the-enterprise/how-to-create-a-bootable-usb-to-install-os-x/

If not, I'm afraid you will have to turn to an authorized apple service center. They will do the repair for you.

Frequent curtain of doom stops my PowerBook G4

You need to reset the firmware...
first up, do the 'soft' reset: 1) Boot into the Open Firmware. (Command + Option + O + F)
2) type reset-all followed by the return key
If that doesn't solve the problem, check this out.. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Is there a firmware update waiting to be downloaded (check in 'software update')

Nothing appears on screen just white

Restart with Mac OS disc inserted, while holding down the C key to restart from the OS on the disc.
Then launch disc utilties program and repair the permissions on your hard drive...
Restart... did it get you up to your desktop?

When I start up my G4 I doesn't get past the white logo screen with the circular icon spinning. Have removed battery and depressed start up button until a loud beep occurs but still nothing

I had a problem with my hard discs. That's where I got, but my screen froze after a few minutes. try pressing apple + s after the chime. See if you can search around there. Also, try holding the shift key when you hear the chime, or when booting if you don't normally hear the chime, and hold it 'till you see the apple logo.

Failure to reboot after a Software update.

Hi stuart,
It sounds like you either may have a corrupt system or a faulty hard drive. Try reinstalling OSX with the system discs that came with the computer. You can still keep everything if choose the "Archive and install" option.
If this doesn't help, then I'd say the hard drive may have seen its last days.

Powerbook g4 going to white screen only!!

Do you have any external harddrive attached to it? If so, remove it before restarting. Try to start it up in safe mode by holding the Shift button down at startup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

Start up

try it without the new ram and see if the problems go away- might just be incompatable ram.

Powerbook G4 (1 GHz), 15" LCD glitchy

It could well be the ribbon cable between the screen and motherboard is knackered. Depends how brave you are at dismanteling computers, if you search on powerbook parts you may be able to find a company that scraps computers who could sell you the cable if it is a separate item otherwise it will be an expensive Apple repair!
