If an operating system installation should fail you must remove the partition with the failed operating system. This will give room to try to install the operating system again.

1• Download GParted live CD from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/
Burn ISO Image to CD.
Boot computer from live CD.
• Wait to boot from default option.
5 • Double click on GParted option on desktop.
Wait for a window to open.
Determine the partition with the broken operating system.
• Right click and select 'delete'.
• Click tick to apply.
10 • Read warning and confirm.
Wait for process to finish.
• Restart computer.
13 • FINISHED - DONE! ????

How to partition for local disk

It would help if I had more information, but I`ll try to help you. I`ll assume your OS will be Windows, if you have the installation DVD, boot to it then choose your preferred language and keyboard settings. Click next then choose "custom install'. Next window you should see your hard drive, choose advanced options and from here you can set your partition parameters.

If you don`t have a Windoze DVD use gparted from a Ubuntu live installer or just about any other Linux repair ISO. Another option is to download gparted or parted magic ISOs, their free. You can also use command line tools like fdisk for MBR, parted or gdisk for GPT partitioned drives.
Here is links to all the software and instructions:
Hope this helps you, good luck!

I interupted the hard disk erase program (my new hard disk)and now I don't see it anymore in the explorer. how can I solve this problem. kind regards

It could be the partition is gone. Right click on computer and pick manage. Then under storage there will be disk management. If you can see the drive there you will have the option to Partition, format and so on. If not you might want to try gparted. You can down load the ISO and make a boot cd or memory stick . In both cases you can easily wipe out you main drive. Be careful and sure which drive you are working on. If you go the gparted route you may want to unplug your main drive so you are sure.

I hope this is helpful

Seagate freeagent go

It is a better job to extend the partition with 3rd party partition software, you do no to do much effort and then you could achieve the goal, and there are several free partition software that could achieve this goal without data loss like AOMEI Partition Assistant, Gparted live CD and so on, i prefer Aomei, it is much friendly than Gparted and the Diskpart commond.

Hello Anirudh,

To run the hard drive in Linux

Connect to the Internet. You will need access to the Internet to download the install files.
Open your Terminal in Ubuntu. This is the screen with the prompt where you can type commands.
Type "sudo apt-get install Gparted." Type in your root password and answer "Yes" to any prompts.

Type "sudo GParted." This will open GParted.Click the GParted menu and select "Devices." Select your external hard drive from the list. It is important that you choose your external hard drive and not the drive that has your system installed on it. One way to ensure this is to check the capacity on this drive; for example, if your internal disk is 80 GB and your external disk is 40 GB, choose the disk that is 40 GB.Click the "Devices" menu and click "Create Partition Table." Click "Advanced." From the New Partition Table menu, choose an option, depending on your system. For example, if you are dual booting Windows and Ubuntu, you may want to choose MS-DOS. If you are only running Ubuntu, choose GPT.Create a partition. Select a section of unused space and click "New."Set up your partition. For partition size, set the size of your partition--for most purposes, you can make the partition the entire capacity of the disk. Next, choose a partition type; primary is suitable for most purposes. Next, choose a file system. For sharing across a Windows system, use Fat32. For sharing with an Apple system, use HFS or HFS+. For use with an Ubuntu system only, use EXT2, EXT3 or EXT4.Click "Apply." The operations will run and your hard disk will be ready to use.

Just download GParted and boot it from a USB drive. Here is their official site and guide on how to make a bootable USB. After that, you just resize the existing partition and make a new one from the left over space.

Have to make partition as C and D drive

Since you have used the recovery disc to restore the system, it will automatically create partitions on the system, in your case, just one major partition which is Drive C (C:). If you want to add partitions on your system, you can use partition editor software such as Norton Partition Magic 8.0 and Acronis Partition Manager. These software gets a portion of the main Partition (Unused / Free space) and creates a new one. You can create multiple partitions depending on the size of the Hard Drive on the system. These Software are not Free, if you want to use a free software for editing the parition, you can use Gparted (Found in : http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ ). Though Gparted is free, it is harder to use compared to the first 2 software mentioned. If you want to use a user friendly sofware, I suggest that you use Acronis Partition Manager or Norton Partition Magic 8.0.
