The directv screensaver came on the SYFY channel (only the SYFY channel) amd I can't make it go away

You can record either the channel 3 or channel 4 output channel from the DirecTV box or connect the analog audio and video outputs to the recorder's inputs and use the In1 or In2 inputs.

Either your tv or your directv receiver is on the text mode of the closed captioning function turn closed caption off and this will disappear.

You will not be able to record local station from a DTV converter connected thru a directv receiver unless there is a a/v input on the directv samsung receiver. Also check the user manual for this receiver if recording from an external source such as a DTV converter box is possible. The answer to seperating the DTV converter box from the directv samsung receiver is possible if your tv has multiple inputs. Try connecting the DTV box to the RF input and the directv samsung box to an a/v input then change inputs using the tv remote. you will need an av cable (yellow/ red/white) for the directv box and a rf jumper cable for the DTV box.

With the VCR connected to DirecTV, you're not picking the channel with the VCR anymore. You're picking the channel on the DirecTV receiver, and the VCR will record on channel 3 or 4 (if you've hooked the receiver up using the RF output to the VCR) or through its line (A/V) inputs if you're using those. The tuning range of the VCR is completely unimportant.

With your new system, though, there's one big drawback. Since the VCR is always set for channel 3 or 4, or its line input, and you're changing channels on the DirecTV receiver, you can't program the VCR to record several different channels if you go out. You won't be home to change channels on the receiver, so the only channel you'll be able to record is whichever one you've selected before you go out. Remember the VCR is taping the output of the satellite receiver, and not the satellite channel directly. If you record on some channel other than the receiver's output channel, there won't be anything there. All you'll get is snow or a blank screen.

If you are trying to connect a VCR to your television and still have Directv, this is the way to do it. Disconnect your Directv receiver from your television, Then connect the VCR to the television either through coax or RCA cables. If using the coax cable connect the out to tv on the VCR to the television. If using RCA cables connect the RCA OUT to the television AV1 connection. Once that is done, connect tha Directv receiver to the VCR using either coax or RCA cables. the Directv receiver only has RCA outputs so, if using RCA cables connect to VCR in. Remember that in order to see the Directv the VCR needs to remain on and it must be on the channel line in. If using coax cable connect to the VCR where it says in from antenna. Remember that if using this method your VRC does not have th remain on to view Direct. If you're trying to record Directv, then your VCR need to be on the same channel as the Directv output channel either channel 3 or 4. I don't know what flat screen tv you have,but you must be aware of the coaxial input behind the TV.It could be analog input,digital input and OUTPUT!!
Anyway,if you connect your basic directv box to your digital input,it will not serve you any purpose to get HD channels and you don't have the HD directv box.The TV will not display digital channel for you because if you use coaxial input to TV,you should be under either channel 3 or 4 and be sure either channel had been saved under memory.In order to change channels,you will need to change it from your directv box.
JUST LIKE a VCR connect to TV.TV will be under channel 3 or 4,and you will change your channels from the VCR.Don't forget to scan all the channels from the VCR!

I had the same problem with my S4253 using Directv. I then turned off the Dolby Digital on the sound settings on the Directv satellite box. Problem went away.

I don't understand why you would bother to scan channel when you have directv or dishnetwork???
directv or Dishnetwork required their units in order to watch any channel,which means:
A. Depending on your TV setting,if you use RF connection from your basic directv to the tv,you would have to leave the TV on Ch.3 or Ch.4.to view the rest of the channels,you have to change it from the directv or dishnetwork box. You are NOT able to scan the rest of the channels from the TV,bottom line!!
If you have comcast or your local cable provider,once you have activated,you could use the RF signal coming out from the wall plate straight to the tv and go to TV auto programming,it will auto scan the available channels for you.
Don't waste your time on directv.
If you are thinking about recording from your BASIC directv or dishnetwork box, you would connect SAT. signal from the wall plate to the directv box,then use composite video/audio output and connect straight to your VCR/DVD player under composite video/audio input. Now you could record the viewing channel to the VHS.
