Normally it'll auto update, but you have to approve it to proceed. To double check, you can go to 'Settings > About Device > Software Upate' to see if it's the latest version. Depending on the brand and model, they may not have the latest Android version in the market, and it's up to the developers what version they'd wanna leave it in.

I suppose you want to update to a higher Android version. I advise against it if you are a novice. First, you have to find an updated version of the ROM for your tablet specifically. Then, you will have to use an appropriate software to flash the ROM into your tablet. There is always a danger of bricking your tablet when flashing.

From what I've read, the tablet comes with Android 2.1 already installed on it. Try going to Settings->>About Tablet and making sure that Android version is 2.1.
