I had exactly the same issue with GE GSS25JSRF side by side (stainless steel) model which is 3 1/2 years old. Of course I took the back panel off the back / bottom of the refridgerator only to find out the noise wasn't coming from the back. :) I then read this post, opened the freezer and bam... there it was... definitely coming from freezer.

I found an appliance parts store locally, called them, they had the evap fan motor in stock, gently asked if this could be the issue and he said.. probably... same thing happened to him... the motor is either on or off so if it is going up and down like this then it is most likely the evap fan motor. I picked up the part for $39 and then proceeded back home to start tearing my fridge apart. ;) In short... I replaced it and problem solved. I am a very happy camper and can now sit on the couch (or work in my home office and stop being annoyed by the sound! It may sound like a lot of work but you can do this in about an hour.

Here is some info on the replacement process that I discovered / figured out that may help you:

    - It will take 45-60 minutes depending on how handy you are.

    - Purge as much junk from your freezer before starting. Move all the remaining items to the bottom and/or store them in another freezer / cooler if you can.

    - Have the following tools handy: Razor blade, 1/4" nut driver (i.e. screwdriver handle with 1/4" socket on end), 1/4" socket driver (normal ratchet type), flathead screwdriver, flashlight, wire cutters or equivalent.

    - Make sure the fridge is unplugged.

    - Remove the ice cube maker and the top 3 shelves.

    - Take off the ice cube maker motor assembly (retangular box in back - 3 screws), remove the main wire cover which is about 1 1 /2 feet tall and covers all this stuff in the back and then remove the actually evap fan motor housing. In the process you will need to disconnect a ground wire and about 3 wire couplings.

    - Install the new evap fan motor in evap fan motor housing (not going to provides all steps here - it is pretty obvious when you see it.

    - The key leap of faith I had to make was that the wire coupling for the existing evap fan motor was molded into a wire gromet / strain relief which forced me to cut wire on both sides of the gromet. I felt like I was difusing a bomb but there really was no other way. I used my razor blade to carefully split the gromet in just the section that fit in the slot of the cover so I could route the new evap fan motor cable through that part of the gromet.

put it all back together and the sound was gone, everything back to normal.

I bought my side by side Refrig almost 5 years ago, and it has made that humming noise from the beginning. I've learned to ignore it but when I have guests over, it drives them crazy. Since I'm not handy, the detailed directions for repairing it won't help me but maybe I can get someone else to replace the fan motor. It's good information. I need to check with the manufacturer to see how long the warranty is on the refrigerator.

Sorry for the very late post-- replacing the evap fan solved the problem. THanks for all the help

I wouldn't do what is being recommended to you.

That particular model series had a defective control board which GE is gladly replacing if you'll only contact them. Replacing the fan or tinkering with anything else will not solve your problem.

Just use the Internet bulletin boards to do your research before following someone else's advice.

I have a hotpoint HSS25GFPJWW fridg. The coil that opens the flapper door for the ice was bad so i replaced it . Now when i push the leaver in to get ice the fridge shut's down like ther is a large power drain. This was doing this before i replaced the coil but the flapper door was not opening then now it opens. It evens shut's the compressor off.

You may want to have someone who is familiar with the new electonic GE models check it out. Make sure they are, some in my area dont know where to start with these. That way he can tell you for sure if its the fan motor. Maybe even make sure he has one with him to expedite the repair if thats what is making the noise. The entire icemaker, auger, and most of the freezer interior has to be taken apart to change the fan. If you decide to try it yourself i can be of great help. It may take a live chat session while you are working on it.

High-pitched chirp at same time every night

High pitch noises are very difficult to isolate. Since you have replaced the refrigerator, I would look for something else in the immediate vicinity that might be generating the sound.

Why is our fridge frozen all the time?

Hi!!

The evaporator fan (little fan in freezer), is the one that blows cool air to the fridge. If your evaporator is freezing up, it could be due to the thermostat set too high, and the fridge control set too low. Set freezer temp. one number lower, wait 24 hrs and check, if evaporator still freezes, lower it one more setting. If temp in fridge is OK. leave it alone, or adjust accordingly.

Let me know how it worked out.

Good Luck!!

A side by side GE refrigerator with a loud hum

Hello Kchoffman73,

It sems we developed the same problem.
The hum seems to be coming from the bottom rear of the
fridge.

we have a GE side-by-side model TFX25JR.
The fridge is about 12 years old.

Whats the status of your fridge ? Did it ever stop
humming ? Did you replace or repair it ?
Does it still work ?

Thanks
