This could be a couple of things.

If the hand wheel is stiff then it is some sort of jam or bind in the machine.

If the hand wheel spins freely the motor belt may be off or broken.

If every thing checks o.k. then it could be some sort of error in the shaft rotation sensor, a cable or a circuit board.

good luck!

I've got a brand new brother see 400 just got it ready to embroidery for the first time never been used and it says safety device has been activated what is wrong

Um, it is brand new? Take it back and have the vendor check it out or get a replacement. If the safety feature has been activated, it probably is not safe to use in its current condition.

If you can, try to remove the needleplate and the bobbin case from the machine. Once the bobbin case is removed, the needle should be free.

Safety Device Activates but no error message

It sounds like there may be something inside the machine. This happened to me twice. The first time was the wrong stabilizer. The second time I had a piece of thread inside the machine. When I opened it to see the thread was activating the error beep in the machine. I hope it helps.

Brother SE-350 "The safety device has been activated"

Return the bobbin winding shaft on the top right of the machine to the Left Position. It may be stuck in the middle.
I had this same problem. After an hour or two of fiddling, this fixed my problem.
