Westinghouse LVM-37w1 37 in. HD-Ready LCD Television Logo

Westinghouse LVM-37w1 Screen suddenly goes black and the speaker pops. No picture, no sound. But the blue light stays on and does not turn amber. Cable box hooked up using components. DVD hooked up using components. I have unhooked one component at a time and this occurs for both dvd player and cable box.

About two minutes after turning on, the sceen goes black. It will stay this way several minutes and then come back on as normal. This cyclw will repeat itself one or two times over the next ten minutes and then operate as normal. I can watch for several hours with no repeat of this. When the screen goes black, I can sometimes bring the picture back by tapping on the monitor with my hand.

I have a HD Westinghouse TV. The TV suddenly just goes black, blue light stays on, PVR remains on but screen is black. This started happening within the three months of receiving the TV

power light on, screen light blue haze

  • alphazero Jan 16, 2008

I was playing Halo 3 on Xbox Live while this same model just goes black, the audio is still on because its coming from the xbox to stereo, however i didn't notice if any audio was coming from the Lcd itself. Like all of you, the blue light was still on, which usually indicates that the lcd is on. I attempt to reboot the lcd, but the power on/off button is unresponsive, in addition so are the other buttons; volume, channel, and input. i luckily have a back up lcd that i was able to substitue for a few days, when i felt that the westinghouse was ready for a test i powered it up and everything seemed to be normal, then minutes later, the same thing happened, the black screen and the buttons aren't responding. When i say "black screen", it seems like the Lcd isn't sourcing out black light, but more in terms of the lcd looked "off". then yesterday i powered it back on to run some tests on all the inputs; first, the DVI port - 2 hrs no prob. Then the component inputs - 4 hrs no prob. I'm wondering if this is just an intermitent problem or not. and what parts should i buy? if i could hold this thing off for a yr. i'll be able to buy a name brand next time.

This has been happening to me for about a week. If i leave it unplugged for a day, I can plug it back in and it will work for a few minutes. Then the screen goes dark, at the same time the speaker pops, but the blue light remains on.

Like everyone else I am just outside of the warranty.

This TV SUCKS it has been the worst mistake of my life. It turns itself off anytime it wants, and one time it did this right in the middle of the super bowl. I hope someone finds a solution soon!!!

  • tomsnead33 Oct 20, 2008

Exact same problem. BB said this was the Main Control Board (
5600110382) but everyone else seems to think this is the power supply (

4900211780). Please - does anyone know which one this is?

  • dbroncs3053 Oct 21, 2008

This first happened to me right after I had programmed a new Harmony remote to control the tv. The screen goes black, then after about the 3rd or 4th time of powering the tv back on it will stay on. I was wondering if this happened to anybody else after programming a universal remote to operate their tv or if mine just happens to be a coincidence?

  • gta1987 Nov 03, 2008

I started having the same problem but thought is was directv hd receiver and contacted them they sent a new one,got the new one did the same thing.I have a new computer hooked up with tv tuner and was watching football game and it did the same thing.Black screen blue light still on.In my case turn it off and back on and it works, it does this usually when you first turn it on 1,2,3,4 times then it usaully stops doing it.So I did a search on google and found all of you,I have a 4 year extended warrantee threw best buy. I bought it in 2006 and till now havent had any problems.Time to call best buy!

I have the same problem. At first after turning it on it would run fine for 30 minutes and then the screen would go off but the audio would keep going.

I wrote a blog post about my LCD issues.

I tried fixing this problem with a replacement power supply I bought on ebay for $130. Easy enough to do--just take out a bunch of screws and then swap the part out. It worked for a couple hours and then it was history again. Save the $ and buy a new TV.

Screen shuts off and the blue light stays on.

  • mtaplc May 04, 2009

Problem is the same. I think it may be the power supply. shopjimmy.com does not list any power supplies for LVM-37W1 only LVM-37W3. Are these equivalent

I'm trying to connect my cable box or my DVD player and I'm only getting a blue screen on every source outlet what am I doing wrong?

I have had this problem since about superbowl time. If I powered the set off, waited 15-20 seconds, and then powered on, it would work again for a while. Repeating this drill a number of times would lead to stable operation. We resorted to a course of turning on some XM music from DirecTV when we weren't watching. I tried a technician knowledgeable on this set, and it would have cost $500-800 to repair the set. We learned from different forums that the likely culprit was either the power supply board or the LCD controller. We also picked up the rumor that Westinghouse had quit making replacement part. It would seem that the management of this organization has a death wish. TO THE CHASE: shopjimmy.com is now selling parts from canibalized sets. They have a non-DOA warranty and a good return policy. A power supply from "Jimmy" solved my problem. I have one important hint: To remove the back, take out the obvious screws and the base. Then remove the ~5/8" rods that protrude from the bottom. There is a screw up inside each rod.

Aloha everyone,
Add one more to the list of victims of the WestingLouse company. Bought this POS monitor in 2006. Paid for extended warranty. Pop goes the screen. After you screw around turning it on and off it eventually won't come on again at all. It is the Power supply board. It can be removed with a screwdriver and a lot of time. Called Best Buy and they said they had no record of my warranty (of course). They are not making power supply boards for this model anymore. You can get one through ebay if you're lucky (or maybe not so). These are canabalized from old monitors and therefore are a "Pop" away from failing themselves. Remeber their guarantee is no DOA. So in a week or month you will be stareing at that blank screen again. This beast has been sitting around my livingroom for months. Can you spell CLASS ACTION? Westinghouse - Never again!

Westinghouse is the worst TV on earth, I hated the quality from day one, and now the above mentioned problem (exactly like mine) is ruining our tv experience. POS,

NEVER BUY WESTINGHOUSE !

Power supply issue. Unlike many of you I (thought) I had purchase a 2 year extended warranty. I purchased this in June 2007. In June 2008 the set died with the exact symptoms described here and elswhere. The extreme short version of this is that westinghoue refuses to hep however did admit, sort of, that (And this is a driect quote from them to me) "There have been no recalls on this model (or any of our models), but it's not surprising to find a similiar issue on more than one of millions of televisions." They also said they provide part to anyone via their dub sidstriboutors. However yesterday, August 7, I was informed Westinghouse no longer provides power supllies for this therefore it can not be fixed.

As for the bait and switch warranty I purchased - it is a long story but short version is upon purchase it caid if anything went wrong it was covered 100%. If it coulod ne be fixed it owuld be replaced - 100%. It also said that if it needed to be shipped all cost woyld be covered 100%. So here I am with a monitor sitting in a repair shop that will not be returned to me uless I PICK IT UP because service.net will not pay for it to be returned. I will not get a replacement set but am getting a "buy out" offer of about 570.00 I can use for anything I want. Within one minute of being told it could not be repaired I purchased the power supply myself however unless I get my Monitor back that may be another waste of money.
So solution to everyone at this point is - 1> Fix it yourself 2> Try to find a legal team who does class action lawsuits and file against Westinghouse for putting out units with faulty power supllies that now can not be fixed because they no longer make the power supllies 3> sit back and get reamed again by compnaies who think we won't fight back. I am alsready fighting back at least to the repir shop who is holding my monitor hostage and Service.net who is selling scam warranties.

LVM-37w1 after 5 minutes of viewing, picture and sound go off. Blue power light turns orange. attempts to turn on TV are unsuccessful. Blue light immediately turns orange.

I saw this fix posted on another blog by a fellow named Patrick. I tried it today and it it worked. It fixed my Westinghouse lvm-37w1. Basically disassemble the back of the TV (removing all the screws on the edges and middle). Remove screws holding bottom speaker and stand. There are 2 chrome rods extending down. There are small screws inside holding them on. You can turn the rods and unscrew the screws but need a small screw driver to put them back on. Remove the black cover on the back. remove the plates on the lower middle section. You will expose a printed circuit card. unplug wires and unscrew 4 screws holding it in. Remove it, turn it upside down and inspect the solder joints near the lower middle (especially under the gray relay on the other side). I found 4 solder joints that were cracked. Resolder the larger solder joints that are cracked or look bad (small solder joints are too delicate). Put it back to gether and it should work now. Mine works great. No more black screen with no sound.12_2_2011_5_11_21_am.jpg

Westinghouse LVM 37w1 Screen goes black, blue light stays on, sometimes turning the tv power off and on fixes it, sometimes just have to wait about 10 minutes and it works again. Could it be the...

Plasma and LCD TV sets are prone to having capacitors in the power supply section fail. This is the most likely cause for the probem you describe. When capacitors fail your will commonly see one or more of the following symptoms.
  • No video, Power light is on or blinking.
  • TV is making a clicking noise.
  • TV takes a while to come on
  • Screen is very dim or flickers.

Again, You can get a power supply repair kit with the parts, detailed instructions, and support from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com . Or just click here to see more details on their kit.

Here are pictures of capacitors...Notice that the ones below look bloated. They have failed and will need to be repalced.

Hello, I can assure you it is the inverter board on this unit. The T-CON board (controller) will only mess with your picture in different ways but you the way you describe the symptoms it is for sure your inverter board. The harders part wil be to find some, you should probably look in www.shopjimmy.com, or www.invertercentral.com.

It is worth fixing but you have to replace the power supply. It is a fairly common problem with the Westinghouse units.

WON'T POWER UP

I had the LCD repaired. It turns out that the power supply went out. It cost me a few hundred bucks but it was worth the repair rather than buying a new one for 3x as much.
