I was able to print the test page per the advice. I reset the paper type and checked the other settings.

The printer will print e-mail messages sometimes and I was able to print from Notepad, but the paper light flashes red when printing from Word 2003.

Ditto re red light suddenly flashing, after using it just fine last night (and for the past year!) ... and with no paper jams (I've checked thoroughly).

Damn, just as I'm starting a big work project, too.

I'm following Soulvisitor's advice (thank you, Soulvisitor!!!), and so far the test print has worked fine so there's simply some glitch or overload somewhere. Will continue with S's suggestions ....

  • AnnaLouise Jan 07, 2008

Fixed it! Turned out to be a wonky setting in Word. Whew. (Again, thanks for the help here that pointed me in the right direction.) -- A.L.

Paper light flashes "Paper" in red even though paper is in the paper tray. Why is it doing this and how do we fix it?

  • Anonymous Dec 02, 2008

These suggestions did not work for me.... anything else that can be done short of taking it to be repaired?

  • awier Jan 02, 2009

I have the same problem. I tried the [soulvisitor] solutions, but it is still blinking. I have opened, cleaned, and disassembled parts to be sure there are no bits of paper in jamming a sensor. It's not a bad print job (memory, complex document, paper size) as I have cycled the printer power many times, disconnected it from ethernet and USB - even left if off overnight.

Is there a hidden reset button somewhere that I can try? All help is greatly appreciated.

Same problem. Same attempts to clear/reset sensors.

That flashing paper light indicates a few things on these, most often it is related to paper not in tray or jammed/not picked up but I see in you case it isn't.......

Your light can also be indicating that the page size sent, it doesn't think it has so it is asking you to feed correct size paper as per document that you sent it, into the little slot at the front called the bypass...(change paper size setting in tray or document page size).

You can test if above is problem by unplugging USB turn off/on machine should come to green, press go button 5times supersuper fast, test print should print shortly.

If printing labels, card, transparencys or have setting as this paper type machine will default to manual pass (cause it needs to be feed those sort of things, straight, not from cassette.

It can also mean memory full or print overload, (pressing go button will start print of remaing data) Doc too complex

or Door open front or back

or even Clean Carona (blue slidy thing on drum)

Drum light fix below

Open cover

Press and hold down Go button for about 4 seconds until all the LEDs light up. Once all 4 LEDs are lit, release the Go button

Close cover

Grant look at page size settings of documents you are truing to print it is set diff to printers tray size ie in word, file, page settup, paper.... also your default will be wrong once you change page/paper size on doc click set as default option too any old doc you open will still be wrong change and resave, new ones will be right now

Okay guys this is gonna sound stupid, but i called my IT guy. he came up, DC'ed the unit and placed it on my desk. he then reconnected it and it worked fine. apparently, after much trial and error, he figured out that moving it from it's stand and placing on a flat surface fixes it every time. however, this may just be isolated to my printer. but it worked so i thought i'd share.

I have had this problem intermittently for months then I read a post that said it was a dodgy setting in Word but gave no details so I did some investigating and found that the paper source was set to "Manual". Go to File > Page Setup > Paper > Paper Source and change to "Default Tray (Auto Select)". Now works fine.

Had a paper jam and my daughter pulled the paper through the front now it wont work and the red light keeps flashing, Is my printer ruined now??

what you need to do is restart the printer and if you get the same problem try cleaning the front of dirt and dust ( maybe bits and pieces of paper still blocking the sensor) that's why the red light keeps flashing.

PAPER gets stuck in the printer and red lights comes on. Paper is getting constantly stuck in printer and so I can't use printer.

Try cleaning the roller on the front part of tray. It may be dusty. When it is dusty paper can slip and cause paperjams.

Brother HL-1435 won't print, thinks it's out of paper

Please see the following support articles that concern paper feed and jam problems on your machine: here, here, here,
If the Paper Source is set to manual you will receive this error. (See use guide pg.1-10) (here)
REmove the paper tray completely, open the rear access door and make sure there are no bits of paper anywhere. Then reinsert and restart the printer.... If all else fails, you could try a factory reset as described here.

Light keeps flashing red,amber, green

If you turn off the printer and turn it back on, do you get any noises, ie motor noises, or does it instantly go to all lights flashing?
If you get no noises this usually indicates a board fault and you should look for a new printer.
