Carrier AC Model No. 38CKS fan not spinning

I have a Carrier AC Model No. 38CKS.

Just last night when we put on the AC, we found out that although there is an air coming out of vents it is not as cool as it used to be.
This morning I found out that the Fan is not spinning. After some research I gave it a push and it started spinning when the AC was ON.

But when I switched it off and ON again, the Fan is still not spinning. What could be wrong?

Thanks,

    Thanks James!

Appreciate your comments. Could you please explain little bit more on how I can get to the capacitor. I mean is there a users / repair manual that I can get hold-off.

Also, would appreciate if I can get some recommendations for AC repair in San Jose, CA.

    Thanks Again!

Thank you James. I got the Capacitor off of eBay for $34 (incl. S&H) and got it replaced and the AC is back to normal condition.

    This is great solution!

You have bad cccccccccapacitor in your outside unit. Not hard to replace but you need to find someone to sell you one It should say 45 5 or 50 5 on the side of the capacitor. You can also call a service tech about 150 for the repair. Rus Carrier Dealer 45 years

The capacitor is located on the outside unit. Just take the panel off and you will see a silver cylinder with three terminals out the top. That is the capacitor. It is very easy to replace. Just read the side and it will something like 35uf5uf 370 or 440 >just copy these numbers and you can buy a cap. at a supply house. Make sure you have powere off when you are working on unit. You can call a service tech and get a estimate on repair. Should be about 150 to 180 for repir. Russ

Carrier model 38cks air conditioner compressor fan

sounds like you need to replace the condenser fan motor. It has a thermal overload inside the compressor and will shut it off before it harms the compressor. The only way to get it to reset is cool down the compressor with a water hose.

I have a Carrier 38CKS and want to do general maintenance, oiling etc. on my unit. Last week when I was outside, the unit started up....It made an awful squealing sound for a moment before the fan started...

Sounds like your fan motor is going out keep an eye on it it could just have been the first start of the season. The unit does sit there all winter not moving. If this continues replace fan motor and capacitor. If this helps please rate me and do a testimonial.

I addred coolant to the AC unit a few weeks ago and it has been running fine until last night. I went to check the pressure and make sure the line was not frozen this morning since the indoor air climbed...

Hi,
It is just coincidental that the fan motor died now...
Replace the condenser fan motor and you will be good again...

38cks is blowing air but it's not cooling

First thing, are the filters clean? If so then you have lost some gas from the system and need to find and repair the leak, and put in correct gas charge.
