Cooling fan for rad not working.. if relay is

you can disconnect the electrical plug on the rad cooling fan/s and run jumper wires directly to the motor contacts from the battery if it does not run replace the cooling fan motor. if the motor runs then check for a bad cooling fan relay. this is were its best to have a scan tool as you can see the coolant temp of the engine and the computer commanding the cooling fans to come on. if the computer commands the fans to come on then you have eliminated 2/3 of the system working.

depending on the year, there should be 3 relays that control the fans.
There's a rad fan relay (4 pins), an a/c condensor fan relay (4 pins), and a fan control relay (5 pins). This allows them to be run at low speed or high speed. Check the grounds behind/under the righthand headlamp.
Check Fuses 57, 58 (30 Amps) and fuse 46 (15A) under the hood, and fuse 3 (7.5 Amps) in the driver's underdash fusebox.

there are 2 or 3 fans up front on all A/C equipped cars.
the fan closed to engine (rad rear) turns on parked and idling
all engines will overheat parked, if the fan goes dead.
so are you saying this fan is dead.?
if it dont overheat moving fast then the cooling system is usually good
and then you stop at a traffic light this fan must turn on.
on cars with 3 fans , some stage up, 2 on if too hot. or all 3 on.
the FSM covers this logic clearly.
in the USA car.
the element has 2 fans (some engine options my differ)
the right fan is for A/C
and left fan is for engine cooling, (im looking at alldata.com to see that)

the fan turns on via a relay that he PCM controls
the PCM see the ECT sensor in the engine go to over say 225F and
it closes the relay, and the fan spins at full speed.

fuse 4 runs this relay, in the fuse box
the relay and fuse are named
radiator fan.

have you checked the head gasket. oil with gunk on the cap. water when standing have a film on it. gray or black smoke coming out of the exhaust... the thermostat been replaced ??? need to check these. dont keep throwing money at it. in the end you can change every thing and cost you a fortune. then find out it was something that just cost a few dollers or pounds.

i would check and make sure the cooling fan is operating,if not it will overheat sitting still.a thermostat will cause overheating whether or not it sits still or driving(more so when driving).the same if it has a bad water pump although it may circulate just enough coolant when driving to not overheat with air flow also adding a cooling effect.if you don`t have a leak then i would say the water pump is okay as they usually will leak before causing a overheat problem.make sure the cooling fan is working and the rad does not have anything stopping the air flow over the rad and is not stopping coolant flow in the rad.

You need to get the cooling fan checked,it may need a temperature sensor,fan relay or the fan motor may be burnt out.You can check the fan by running your own power and ground to the plug that comes out of the fan motor,unplug it and put the ground to the black wire and positive power to the other one,if it works then the next step would be to check the fan relay.The most common problem if the fan doesn't work but can be made to work with jumper wires is the temperature sensor,you can check it by unplugging it and jumping the wires in the plug.If the rad fans work then you are down to either the water pump or a plugged radiator,a rad shop should be able to narrow it down for you.

Check your your radiator cooling fan should come on at about 220 deg. and off at about 210 deg. at idle with a/c off, if it stats to over heat turn a/c on, fan should come on right away, if it dont check voltage at fan motor, if you do have voltage, you have a bad radiator fan motor, more then likely the reason it don't over heat while driving is air is being push through radiator where it cool's the coolant before it goes back into the engine, at stop's no air running through and never cool's coolant .

CHECK YOUR SPEED FAN RELAY ONE SIDE IS FOR YOUR AIR CONDITIONING YOU HAVE HI AND LOW RELAYS

on most cars , there is a temp sensor screwed into the radiator. When the coolant reaches a certain temprature , the contact inside the sensor closes , and completes the circut for the fan relay.
It should have two wire terminals , pull the wires off , and jump the posts with a short piece of wire or metal. Fan should start . ( Keys must be in the run postition , or engine running when you do this. )

If the fan goes , that means the sensor is not working. If the fan does not go , than it's something else. Perhaps the relay , or the fan motor itself is no good.

If your car has A/C , the fans should turn on when the A/C is turned on.

If you start the engine cold , it should not overheat for quite a while.. If it overheats within 5 min of driving , than your thermostat is probly cooked.

Most cars cooling fans do not run most of the time , airflow through the rad while driving is enough.
The fans would only come on while siting still ( idleing ) for a while.

turn your heater on to max heat and high fan. then see if you can feel the hoses on the firewall for heat they should be hot. make sure that the fan unit on the radiatoris working if the upper radiator hose is hot the fans should be running if they are not that means that either the relay is bad the thermo sensor is bad or the fan unit is shot... please rate the solution..........thanks
