Printers are indeed very finicky devices and sometimes they are just not any good any more. New printers are as cheap as the two new cartridges, which makes it just as cheap to upgrade to a newer printer. Good luck!
Yes those Panasonic models are the same just the KX-FL 612 is different from KX-FL 611 in some specifications like as example: 611 prints maximum 14 pages per minute and 612 prints 16 pages per minute. The document feeder on 611 can feed maximum 20 pages while 612 can feed 30 pages and some other compare stuff like those. Mainly KX-FL 612 is improved version of KX-FL 611
