Can my player be safely unlocked? I don't want to damage it.
Is it possible that your Blu-ray disc has the ABC logo on it? That doesn't necessarily mean the Blu-ray disc is region free. It could still be a region locked disc even if it has that logo on it. If it is, in fact, a region free disc, you would be able to play it on all Blu-ray players. It's hard to tell which region it's from so I would suggest that you try ripping the Blu-ray to MP4 and play it on your computer. It would make things simpler. Here's how: How to Rip and Convert Blu ray to MP4 with Blu ray to MP4 Converter
If you don't mind paying for another Blu Ray player that is region free, here is a place which sells them and one of their less expensive offerings:

I have one of their Pioneer region free DVD players and it works very well. I use it to play DVDs from the UK that aren't made for the USA region. It also plays USA DVDs, and can play those form Asia also. At the time Blu Ray region free players were a lot more expensive. If they were this cheap I would have bought one of these instead of a regular DVD player.
Another thing you might do, if you have a PC with a Blu Ray player, is use VLC media player. I use it with Linux to play any region DVD player. It may do the same in Windows, too, and it should work similarly with Blu Ray discs.

If you have region free blu ray disks then they will play in any blu ray player, the player does not have to be unlocked!
