Mark,
Try this first. Not sure, but most Vizio menus within the last 4 years should be close enough to navigate through. It's a little tricky to get to. You highlight picture, then you hit the right arrow to bring up the Picture menu. Go down to Advanced Video (one above Reset Picture Mode) and hit the right arrow again to bring up another submenu. Go down to Backlight Control. There are three options: OFF, DCR and OPC. Both DCR and OPC seem to cause a problem. Try turning this feature to "OFF" and see if the the problem goes away

Testimonial: "the screen is black and when i hit menu i cant see it to navigate through"

    Mark,

Sometimes the following action will discharge any residual build up of static on the backlight circuit board.Turn the TV off and unplug it. Press the power button on the side of the TV for 30 seconds. Let go of the power button and plug the TV back in. Turn back on. Can you see a screen now?

If not, I think I've gone as far as I can to help you. You'll need service. I'm not a qualified tech but throughout the years, I've heard of and learned a few tricks. Hope this helps.

BTW, how old is your set?

I have a large darker than the rest of the screen on my vizio tv

The Vizio "E" (economy) series sets have local diming, on most brands if some of the lamps go bad the screen is black but not on these model Vizio TV's, for this reason it's harder to troubleshoot the set for possible bad backlights or backlight inverter issues. If you have a LED backlight tester you can test each zone at the backlight connector off the inverter board to see if each is working, without a tester you're going to need to remove the panel then move strips that don't light to ones that do and see if it's the strips bad or inverter issues.

My LED TV started displaying a darker area, about the top third of the screen about three weeks ago. Today it went black. What might be the problem?

This sounds like a heat build up in the TV set if not ventilated properly it causes the shading effect on the screen coating causing the dark area eventually it takes over the whole screen

My Vizio TV has dark spot top left corner

Hi Brandon,
I am afraid that the dark spot in the screen is not repairable. Manage as long as you can or go for a new tv.

Replaced lamp and picture is very dark

My 2006 model had a problem right after I bought it, it started getting colored splotches all over, so I called panasonic and they said it could not be fixed....since I bought the insurance they sent me my money back for the tv. About 2 weeks later I got a call saying the panasonic company had sent in a repair ticket and made an appointment to come fix my tv....it turned out to be an eeprom reprogramming problem. They fixed it and panasonic paid for it. :-) The tv had a beautiful picture after that up until about October 2013. When you replace the lamp, it's important to clean out the area the lamp goes into. I wipe everything in there with a soft cloth and I also use the crevice tool on the vacuum to vacumm it out really well. Seemed to make a difference to me. But depending on the age of your tv, it could judt be a sign that something is going wrong in the light engine. My tv got darker (I just went in and lightened it in the settings) and after awhile I had to replace the lamp more often and then it started getting tiny blue spots around the perimeter of the screen. The grandkids called it the milky way. It eventually got red vertical lines and they would go away if we turned it off for a few minutes, but after awhile they were here to stay....the light engine was definitely going out. So, now we have a new 65" tv.
