SOURCE: computer shut down ..wont restart

what has happened is your hard drive as failed and that is why it shut down and then gave the unmountable boot volume. You could try repairing windows using your XP cd but it's a new hard drive i recon.

Applications load at Startup, some may not be required. you can disable Startup applications using MSCONFIG.

  • Click Start, click Run and type MSCONFIG
  • Click Startup tab on top and view the listings.
  • Uncheck the applications which you want to disable from Startup
  • Click OK
Windows XP does not require any program for mandatory Startup.
But you should leave the following to run at Startup.
  • Firewall programs
  • Anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities
  • Keyboard software or related for hotkey functionality (this one is optional as well)
  • Software provided by your Internet Service Provider (for Internet Connectivity)
Also run a cleaning program such as Ccleaner and an antivirus program such as spybot search and destroy to make sure your system is clean and free from viruses.

Please rate this a fixya.

Are you using the trackpad to manipulate the cursor, or are you using an external mouse?

If you're using the trackpad, it may be as simple as using the Fn keys and the corresponding F keys at the top of the keyboard to enable the trackpad feature again. If that doesn't work, try plugging in an external mouse via USB port to see if that works.
If you're using an external mouse, then try to see if the cursor moves while using the trackpad.

Hopefully one of these options will give you control back over your cursor again.

If the Windows update installation is truly frozen, you have no other choice but to hard-reboot. Depending on how Windows and BIOS/UEFI are configured, you might have to hold down the power button for several seconds before the computer will turn off. On a tablet or laptop, removing the battery may be necessary.Apr 6, 2023

Hi,

You can try to reboot the device by pressing and holding the power key + volume down key for 10 seconds.

If it does not work, please try doing this

Comcast.net e-mail sign-in on Sony Vaio laptop is not working. will keep on bouncing back to 'log inpage'. my password and account work on any other computer. thanks

Go into system, find the wi-fi adapter and open it up. Choose uninstall and click on it. If windows asks you if you want to remove the software from the hard drive say no. Wait for uninstall to complete than shut down the computer, shut down, not reboot. Wait a couple of minutes than turn it back on, sign in and let windows find and reinstall the driver. It now should work. 9 times out of 10 this corrects this issue.

Try pressing and holding the power button until the computer shuts down.
Also note that when removing the battery, you also need to unplug the power cord in order to shut down the computer in that manner.

Laptop will not restart

Hi just to clarify have you tried pressing F8 and going to last known config? or does it shut down before that?
This sounds like you've managed to corrupt your mbr on your hard drive, although this is only a guess at the moment. On some laptops you have a choice at boot up to select restore, usually F10, If this is the case you can try this option and follow the on screen instructions, ensure you read everything carefully. Failing that you can boot with a Windows install disk. When loaded use the repair mode and log on to your windows partition, usually 1, and type fixboot..
Please be very careful using this option as you could lose everything. If in doubt Do Not Use...

I hope all this helps. Please let me know how you get on
