The lcd says "check printer" and shows the number 6000. The power and alarm lights are flashing on and off. The print cartridges are at the far right (replaced a few days ago, and worked fine). I tried unplugging and tried manually moving the cartridges to center. Nothing worked.
Thanks,
Bill Schaefer
Reset the printer by turning it off, then turn it back on.
if this doesn't solve the problem theres probably a paper jam, even a very small part of paper can cause the jam or it can be caused by pretty much anything thats not supposed to get inside the printer.
here are my instructions for clearing paper jams:
alternative :
Loada piece of thick paper, for example photo paper and press the resumebutton (may be diffrent button on diffrent models) a few times to theprinter picks up the paper and puts it through the machine.
Here is what canon suggest:
Remove the paper following the procedure below.
(1) Slowly pull the paper out, either from the Rear Tray or from the Paper Output Slot, whichever is easier.
If the paper tears and a piece remainsinside the machine, turn the machine off, open the Scanning Unit(Printer Cover) and remove it.
Be careful not to touch the components inside the machine.
After removing all paper, close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover), and turn it back on.
If you cannot pull the paper out, turn the machine off and turn it back on. The paper will be ejected automatically.
(2) Reload the paper in the machine, and press the OK button on the machine.
If you turned off the machine in step (1), all print jobs in queue are canceled. Reprint if necessary
Also, have a look at what other people have said/ done with the same problem:

That will be a great thing to do and definitely with the new printer everything should be working fine there, feel free to contact us back here for any concern in the future....
The error ur experiencing is definitely a paper jam error ... but it neednt be just paper thats causing the jam... it cud be any small dust particle too... if u say u ve already checked the paper tray, nothing that could cause an error, then tryy unplugging it from the USB cable, there is a lock
on the backside of ur printer, open it and inspect for possible paper jams...
get ur flashlight and aim it in every little corner.there cud be even a candy wrapper ( yes i ve seen it myself this happening) sticking out from the feed ... if u find it pull it out with a pair of tweezers.
if u still dont find anything... i wud suggest turn it all upside down and give it a gentle shake (try this.... but be careful... if u need a hand take somebody's help if u feel its too heavy.... just shake it gently dont shake it too hard as the sensors cud come out of alignment...)
I suggest
a thorough going over with a flashlight into every crevice before
calling for repairs. Another suggestion: Keep anything and everthing
away from your printer tray and feeder opening
always remember ur not just looking for a paper thats jammed it cud be anything from a small pin to a rubber or a candy wrapper....
if ur still not having ur problem fixed...... then it means there is a either a broken part inside, bits of which cud be blocking the feed...or a sensor problem.....
Error 6000 is a service call error, meaning that the printer needs to
be taken into a canon authorized service facility for repair.... we ve tried all that we have to save us the time and money for a service call.... beyond this its more than justifiable to call canon..... thats the proper way to go about...
thank you for using Fixya
have a nice day
Good Luck
Hi bill,
as recommendations from Canon, please try the solutions below. it is a solution for a printwer that is no longer responding.
1.
Configure printer driver to correct port
2.
Start Windows Print Spooler Service (Windows Vista/XP/2000)
3.
Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to ensure a secure connection
4.
Restart the computer
5.
Uninstalling / reinstalling the MX300 / MX310 drivers (Windows)
i hope the links work, if not, let me know

HELP! The expert thinks I have a paper jam. I think I did all he said, but it didn't work. Isn't there a lcd saying "paper jam" when there is a jam?
I did the paper-jam and cartridge drills, and they did not help.
Any other ideas beyond a decent burial?
Bill
Well, none of the suggestions there worked.
Bill
Thanks for your thorough suggestion. I tried it and it doesn't work, so I have decided to get a new printer. This one is way past the warranty period, and I don't want to put any more money (or time) into it.
