Convergence problem I just got this tv for free and there is a convergence problem. When i try to move the red from left to right, it will not move. also the blue seems to be off also. Everything on the tv works fine, but the colors are way off. I have no experience with tv repair, but is this tv worth fixing or should I put it back on the curb where I found it?

Hello mward05,

This is going to cost you about $35.00 in parts and about $30.00 - $60.00 per hour labor, however it depends on if it's just the convergence Correction modules and bias components or if the convergence transformers are involved. I would suggest taking the set to a repair shop and getting an estimate as a possible guide about what could be wrong. If you do not have a background in electronics, I would suggest not only the estmate, but letting the shop do the job.

Now lets discuss what is going to happen:
The shop will tell you that they need to replace the deflection board. You will have to tell then that you believe that the only problem are the convergence modules, and biasing resistors, and that you want them to explore that option first.
If they refuse take your set elsewhere, because they are not doing business the right way. I believe that this (bad convergence modules and bias circuitry) is your only problem.

I hope this helps,
Shuttle83

Our tv looks like a 3d tv. Out of focus

Try to adjust the convergence using the original remote control of your tv, then go to the convergence setting menu, then go to convergence section. You should be able to move the blue and red in any directions right, left and up, down. Or if you cannot move them far enough the convergence chip is defective replacing the bad convergence chip will fix the problem. Feel free to send feed back good day and best regards.

Conversion-----the red lines are distorted so badly they won't move at all. I've managed to line the other lines up. The top left quadrant has drooped so badly that they will not adjust back. The bottom...

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com
