Start out with it set at the midway point between the two ends. That is the basic starting point, but tweaking will most likely be required to get it exactly where it looks best.

How do you tighten tension on bobbin on a necchi 4595?

Generally speaking; You should have two setting bars on your machine, one for the stitch size and one for cotton tension (might be close to needle part, above)...you will see it has numbers you can set it to the level you want. I hope you find this useful.

Older model tension to tight hard to get started

Guessing it is the top tension? Turn the tension dial to a smaller number. There could also be debris/gunk in the tension disks. If you dip a piece of cotton thread (like perl cotton) into rubbing alcohol, squeeze out the excess, loosen the tension dial all the way, RAISE the presser foot, then gently pull the cotton thread DOWN between the tension disks a few times (like you are threading it). That should clean out any gunk stuck in there.

Why can't thread tension be adjusted?

Upper thread breakage is usually caused by incorrect threading, the tension being too tight, or the thread is wrapped around the spool pin or catching somewhere in the thread path.

Remove the thread completely from the machine.

Install a brand new needle making sure it is compatible with the thread and fabric.
All About Needles

RAISE the presser foot and rethread the machine making sure it follows the correct thread path (consult the owner's manual). Verify that the bobbin is spinning the right direction in the bobbin case and the bobbin case is properly threaded.

Set the upper tension somewhere around the midway point between high & low numbers.

Retest.

If problems persist, there may be debris buildup stuck in the tension disk. Remove the thread. RAISE the presser foot, set the tension all the way to zero. Dampen a length of pearl cotton with rubbing alcohol and gently pull the pearl cotton DOWN through the tension disk a couple of times. Rethread with regular sewing thread, reset the tension to the midway point and retest.

If cleaning the tension disk does not help, then it is possible the tension disk is malfunctioning or broken. Take it for service.

It is as if it dosn't help to chance the number at the tension wheel.

Remove the upper thread completely from the machine.

Could try cleaning the tension disk: Raise the presser foot, set the tension to zero, dampen a length of pearl cotton with rubbing alcohol, then gently pull the pearl cotton Down through the tension disk a couple of times.

Install a brand new needle & confirm that the needle & thread are compatible.
All About Needles

Make sure to RAISE the presser foot while threading the upper thread. This allows the thread to seat properly in the tension disk. Of course, it could be that the tension disk is broken or not operating properly.

Need diagram for threading and what must the tension be on cotton

Consult the owner's manual or search the internet for:

Make + Model + the word "Manual"

Factory standard upper tension setting is halfway between the high and low tension numbers. Correct tension is when the upper thread and bobbin thread meet in the middle of the fabric.

Upper tension is meant to be the method for tweaking tension. A sewist should become comfortable with adjusting the upper tension, especially when fabric, thread, or needle are changed.

Hi ,

Make sure your tension is not to tight and that there is now fluff or cotton stuck in between your tension plates. I sometimes use a string of the stitch to pull in between the tension plates. I always set the needles tension first and then i balance the tension of the upper and lower looper.

Make sure the cotton are not looped around a guide. Black cotton and some cottons can build up their own tension. Try different cotton. I\'ve had many a headache with this problem.

Check that the needles are not blunt or bent. I always use schmetz needles. If your needle plate has any damage where the cotton can get hooked. Use a small file or sand paper to remove it. The stitch tongue must be very smooth and the stitch must slide of smoothly. Check that your lower looper point does not have a sharp hook on it. You can use a very fine water sand paper to remove it.

If your needles are touching the looper, i could indicate that your lower looper is out of position. *.*(Always check this with new needles)

Regards

Rob

Cannot set tensions correctly.large loops forming underneath and then top cotton breaking

This indicates the top tension control is too weak. Setting it to number 5 or higher will usually rectify the snitch. Hope this helps.

THE COTTON KEEPS ON BREAKING EACH TIME I WANT O SEW WITH MY YAMATA FY940

The needle thread breaks
1. the needle thread is not threaded properly
2. The needle thread tension is to tight
3. The needle is bent or blunt
4. The needle is incorrectly inserted
5. The needle thread & the bobbin thread are not set under the presser foot when starting to sew
6. the threads were not drawn to the rear after sewing
7. The thread is either to heavy or to fine for the needle
8. try a different thread
9. try adjusting the top thread tension--to a lesser number or letter
use your manual to guide you through tension adjusting

I am sewing a cotton piece of fabric for a dress and i do not know how to set the tension for cotton

The tension for cotton is set the same way tension is set for any fabric:

1. The thread should pull freely with a small resistance before/after it goes through the needle, on many machines that's half way on the tension adjustment.

2. The bobbin thread when dangled by the thread with the bobbin inside the case should drop down a bit when slightly flicking your wrist like you do with a yo-yo. If it reels out to the floor the tension is too loose. If it doesn't drop at all it is too tight.

3. Now make sure you use the right type of needle. For cotton you want a "sharp" and for reg. weight cotton about a size 10 maybe 12.

Now take a piece of strap cotton material like you're going to sew a seem and sew with a wide zig zag. Example the top side and then the bottom. They should appear identical, flat with needle holes at each side where the thread disappears to the other side. You should see no loop where the threads over lap each other and the material should not be puckering in the middle.

If that is not what you see then think this way:

The TOP side of the stitch is effected by the BOTTOM thread. the bobbin tension.
The BOTTOM side of the stitch is effected by the TOP /needle tension.

Adjust the responding tensions until the stitch looks the same on both sides. Now you are ready to sew your cotton! :)
