There should be a display. OE radios tend to use the car's general purpose computer display.
If there is a code It is likely to be an OE product and the code and audio manual (and spare keys) should have been passed on by the previous owner. If such things are not with the car the resale price should be considerably lower reflecting the trouble and expense not having such things can cause subsequent owners.
If the previous owner cannot or will not help I suggest you contact your local VW dealer.

Hi Debbie Macklin, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
What details do you need? The stereo is labeled Volkswagen on the left side and Monsoon on the right. The 6 CD changer is located in the rear of hatchback. In the owners manual folder there is a black tag that has.a barcode and a 4 digit number while on the other side the tag has a lengthy serial number. I have no idea what it belongs to, however the long number begins with a M. (Hoping it is related to stereo)
because there is no display showing can't seem to access the "safe mode" feature to try.
Tried leaving car key in ignition for an hour, but no luck.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
