Model 17-44HXL with a Briggs/Stratton 17 HP eng. model 31F777.
The float in the carburetor might not be floating at the right height due to the slope. It's also possible fuel might not be reaching the carburetor as it hates to flow uphill. It's unlikely it has a fuel pump. Hopefully, it has an oil pump (and associated oil filter). Engines without oil pumps don't like inclines very well.

Hello! The problem is two fold...# 1...Your engine does not have a fuel pump...Fuel feed is via gravity...
# 2...Never mow across a slope...Mow up and down a slope...You can replace the float and insure proper adjustment; This is an inexpensive fix and may garner some improvement..Your Gravely probably had a fuel pump and did not have a problem...I have a 17.5 hp in an old Murray tractor with a fuel pump attached to the front of the carb...It is a simple membrane with a spring and slopes are not a problem...The fuel filter is different then a motor without a pump...Instead of the round button type it is a large round bowl type which holds more fuel...Depending upon what type of filter is in your engine changing it to one that is designed to work with a pump is an advantage...Just in case you do not have an exploded parts diagram, I've included a link to a safe, free PDF download....
